What, nobody cares about the hoops schedule? You would think it was almost football season or something. :dunno:

15 wins would have to be considered an accomplishment but '05-'06 will be a very good year if Buzz signs who he is suppose to.

All Green did was win 20+ games all 4 seasons, 4 straight NCAA tournament appearances, tied most wins in a season in UT history, an SEC regular season Championship, several East Division titles, and went further into the NCAA tournament than any other UT team.

I disagreed with his forced resignation then and I still disagree with it now.

From Jerry Green biography

Presented with the opportunity to right a sinking; or had it already sunk? ship at Tennessee Green left Oregon for the University of Tennessee in time to begin the 1997-98' season.

He coached the UT Vols to an outstanding 20-9 season that first year including a trip to the NCAA Tournament. This from a team he inherited and a school who hadn't known success for some period of time such as 1993-94, for example when the Vols were at an all-time low of (5-22). "They (Tennessee) hadn't won since the rocks cooled," joked Green, referring to the success of the last three seasons. If you bothered to check you would discover UT's record for the 90's prior to Green's arrival was an abysmal (90-113) over seven seasons with only one winning season (19-15) during that stretch.

All Green and his teams did following that first magical season was keep the magic going with three more 20+ wins ie each of the three succeeding seasons including an outstanding 26-7 season, the most wins in school history, first place in the SEC and their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, they ended the season ranked llth in the nation by the AP. Jerry Green left the University of Tennessee after his fourth season with the Vols. He is currently enjoying life, his friends and his wife wondering, given his experience at Tennessee, whether that "urge" to coach will return.

I think Buzz is a great guy, I'm not sure that he is the coach that Green is though. I guess time will tell.

Buzz is supposedly a better x's and o's kinda coach than Green. Green was more of a recruiter. Under Green, the offense was a bit more wide open and allowed the talent come out. Some of the players were recruited by Kevin O'Neal too, but just blossomed under Green. The knock on Green was what he allowed players to get away with off the court. Also, they were getting more undisciplined on the court as well, at least according to Pat Summitt. So much so that Coach Summitt would not let the Lady Vols players watch the men's practice for fear of them picking up bad habits. Hopefully, after Buzz has enough recruiting seasons to field a full team, that the Vols will be back to winning ways.

The bottom line with Green is that the fans didn't like him and he made some comments that he should not have made. He alienated a lot of people and the fans could not and would not relate to his teams. The media around here didn't help matters any. I didn't particularly like the guy but it's hard to argue with his sucess. You can't just go around firing guys that just had the best 4 year run in school history.

Buzz is a great guy and a class act.....but wasn't that the tag that Wade Houson had when he was here? And we all know that guy couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag.

I am so sick of hearing about Green's record. I will admit that he did some good things on the court. But everyone knows that after O'Neils talent left, the bottom was going to drop out. Green was a cancer to that team in the end. Thank God for Buzz.

I had the honor of meeting Chris Lofton this weekend and he's wonderful. Very nice guy and should be a great addition on and off the court.

I can't wait to see him play.

Green was a joke, he lived off O'Neills talent and left the cupboard bare for Buzz. Green let the looney's control the asylum and if Green was such a great coach why did the top talent and the great coaching that Green have lose to a less talented North Carolina team and why did he not win the Championship when he clearly had the more talented team? Why did he leave the cupboard bare? Why did he go out of his way to tell Tennessee fans that neither he nor his team needed them? Why did he fail in the recruitment of Tennessee high school players?
I will tell you this if Buzz had had Greens talent he WOULD have won an NCAA Championship. Do any of you realize that the image of UT basketball when Buzz took over was worse than when Houston left.

Okay, let's address this item by item:

"he lived off O'Neills talent and left the cupboard bare for Buzz"

Here is the roster for 2000-01. The only players remaining that were recruited by O'Neill were Tony Harris, Del Baker, Charles Hathaway, and Isiah Victor. Buzz promptly booted Harris Walker and Terrance Woods. Woods I might add went on to be one of the leading scorers and 3-point shooters in the NCAA playing for Florida A&M. Included in Green's recruits are NBA players Vincent Yarbrough and Marcus Haislip. Both btw played High School in Tennessee. He also recruited Ron Slay... another Tennessee resident.

NO. PLAYER POS HT WT YRS HOMETOWN
== ====== === == == === ========
2 Jenis Grindstaff G 6-2 185 Jr Spruce Pine, NC
5 Harris Walker G 6-1 170 So Chattanooga, TN
12 Marcus Haislip F 6-10 230 So Lewisburg, TN
14 Tony Harris G 6-0 165 Sr Memphis, TN
22 Vincent Yarbrough F 6-7 210 Jr Cleveland, TN
30 Zach Turner F 6-7 230 So Charlotte, NC
31 Terrence Woods G 6-3 185 So Memphis, TN
32 Del Baker G 6-5 200 Sr Cleveland, TN
33 Brandon Crump C 6-10 210 Fr Klein, TX
34 Andy Ikeakor F 6-8 245 Fr Houston, TX
35 Ron Slay F 6-8 225 So Nashville, TN
42 Jon Higgins G 6-3 190 So Shaker Heights, OH
44 Isiah Victor F 6-9 220 Sr Hopkinsville, KY
55 Charles Hathaway C 6-10 265 Sr Nashville, TN

"Green was such a great coach why did the top talent and the great coaching that Green have lose to a less talented North Carolina team and why did he not win the Championship when he clearly had the more talented team?"

Why do any teams lose? Upsets happen. And to lose to North Carolina is not a shamefull loss. UNC made the Final 4. Remember, there is only 1 team left at the end of the season that does not end the season with a loss.

"Why did he fail in the recruitment of Tennessee high school players?"

See the above roster showing top Tennessee talent in Yarbrough and Slay to name a few. Both were recruited by the top NCAA schools but came to UT to play for Green.

" will tell you this if Buzz had had Greens talent he WOULD have won an NCAA Championship"

Excuse me, Buzz had 2 future NBA players plus Ron Slay his first season and still lost more games than he won.

"Do any of you realize that the image of UT basketball when Buzz took over was worse than when Houston left."

I'm not one for revisionist history, but that is saying alot that the image of UT basketball was as bad as when Wade Houston was there. To the best of my recollection, the Vols were coming off 4 straight NCAA tournaments, 4 straight 20+ win seasons, a few in Knoxville didn't like Green 'cause he did not "stroke their egos" and thought they could bring in a better coach and go to the Final Four. Wade Houston's teams could not win period. If Allen Houston had not been on his teams, they would have been worse... if that is possible. So here we are 3 seasons later and no Final 4.... not even an NCAA invite.

I'm not trying to pick a squabble, but come on let the facts speak for themselves.
