How we performed in several key categories along with our respective national rankings over the past 3 seasons:

A few observations, nothing really revelatory but with an eye on areas in which we have major room for improvement:
  • Terrific rebounding and defensive pressure have been staples under Harper so far. And obviously with Key, blocking shots.

  • For all the success we've had in FG % defense, we continue to do a poor job of disrupting passing lanes & generating steals which contributes heavily to our dismal numbers in forcing turnovers.

  • We continue to be overly generous when it comes to giving the ball away. All teams have stretches of sloppy/careless play, but we've had them far too frequently over the past 3 seasons.

  • IMO, we should never end up in minus territory when it comes to points margin off turnovers but it's happened all 3 years. If we can somehow flip that around, from -2 to +2, our scoring margin would increase by 4 points.

  • We made an inordinate number of trips to the FT line and squandered far too many points there. If we'd just matched last year's FT % of 71.1%, we would've scored 56 more points. Our shooting percentage from the stripe this year was the 2nd lowest in LV history. IMO, it's unacceptable to average under 70% as a team.

  • It's clear that we didn't do a stellar job of hitting our 3-pointers this season, finishing with the 4th-worst shooting % in LV history. Would like to see us raise that to at least 32% next year.

We miss more lay-ups than any team that has wore the Orange. Most of the time it seems from not focusing or too far under the basket to put it on the backboard. These can be fixed if their coached-up

"Missed 1-and1s?" In what decade are you living and watching WCBB?

The game plan when playing the lady Vols, foul them, they’ll miss the free throws. They’ll probably turn it over if a foul isn’t called. Not improved over the last three years. Keep doing the same thing over and over and expect something different. We need a better plan.

With Justine coming in, we have several good three-point shooters. But we're not finding them or setting them up with penetration and kick-outs.

Several times in the 2nd half last Saturday, I saw Darby or Puckett be wide open in the corner waving tbeir arms like crazy. But we either never saw them or couldn't deliver the pass.

What about our FG%, can you add that?

Our FG % wasn't especially good or bad this year, so I didn't include it in the table I shared. But here are those numbers over the same period:
  • 2021-22: .414 (113th)
  • 2020-21: .440 (45th)
  • 2019-20: .440 (37th)
I've added "3-point FG per game" to the table as those numbers show significant room for improvement as well. Would certainly help if we hit a higher percentage, but we also don't attempt a lot of those shots.

Thanks you for showing that! I’ve been curious all year! Good work on that table! Love it!

Seriously? I would say the FG% was especially bad this season. As I noted in another thread, it's near the worst in program history, and as you noted a significant drop-off from Kellie's first two seasons here...

The 3-pt game has never been a priority for Tennessee. I think Bjorklund is the school leader with 305. She should have had way more than that as well as she shot, but they rarely set up plays to free her up.

Just meant that relatively speaking and on a national scale, our FG % wasn't as egregiously bad (just outside the top quartile) as some other statistical categories, like FT % and turnover margin, in which we finished in the bottom decile.

Here are the lowest season FG % numbers in LV history, with 7 of 'em occurring in the past 8 years.

.408: 2015-16
.413: 2008-09
.414: 2021-22
.416: 2004-05
.425: 2014-15
.430: 2016-17, 2018-19
.437: 2011-12
.440: 1992-93, 2019-20, 2020-21
