The 134th meeting of the longest continuous rivalry in FBS. Going into today, Wisconsin held the overall edge in this end-of-the-year rivalry 63-62-8. The Badgers won last year's meeting, ending a two year winning streak by the Gophers. Minnesota came into today hoping to slightly improve its bowl standing while Wisconsin in turn came hoping to reach bowl eligibility before the season ends.
However, Minnesota came out in a pretty dominant fashion, scoring the game's first 3 TDs and never looking back, in the end winning 24-7.
For Wisconsin, they end their season 5-7, more than likely missing a bowl game this offseason in Luke Fickell's second season at head coach, a bit of a step back from last year's 7-6 season (I say more than likely because, although Wisconsin has the second-highest APR among FBS schools, this year's bowl spots are - at least currently - looking to be filled enough that there shouldn't be any need for 5-7 teams to fill any remaining spots). This makes 2024 Wisconsin's first season with a losing record since 2001 (they also went 5-7).
Minnesota, meanwhile, ends the season 7-5 and awaits next week's news of in which bowl game the Gophers will play. Under PJ Fleck, this will be the Gophers' 6th bowl game appearance in the last 7 years (the year they missed a bowl was during 2020's shortened COVID season).
Final score 24-7 Minnesota.
The Gophers win Paul Bunyan's Axe for the 3rd time in the last 4 years, tying the overall series 63-63-8.
