In 45 years of fandom, our 35-7 annihilation of then 2nd-ranked Miami in the 1986 Sugar Bowl was the single most inspired performance I have ever witnessed by a Tennessee football team. This blast from the past, entitled "Battle of New Orleans Tennessee Style" received a lot of air time in the weeks leading up to kickoff and proved to be eerily prophetic. For those of you who relished the moment, and those of you too young to remember, I hope that you enjoy it.

Next year we need a "battle of Eugene, Tuscaloosa, and Gainesville". However I'd settle for one of those :)

I agree. Even the half time show was outstanding. The only problem was New Years Eve celebration in Jackson Square. The crowd was so dense, no one could move anywhere. That game and the National Championship game with the 98 Team stand out with me.

I was in Jackson Square for the New Year of the Millennium, so I completely understand. It would have been cool to have thousands of Vol fans around.

My favorite all time single game. Even more so than the NC game. It was said that we did not even stand a chance in this game and had no real business being in it. By mid way through the 1st qtr the whole vibe of the announcers was changing.

Thanks for posting that! I still have the cassette of that song & about 10-12 others that someone (Weed Bros maybe?) made before the '86 Sugar Bowl. Didn't get to go but watched on TV. Probably 60,000 Vol fans in NO that night. Miami fans (and team!) were no shows! Can't wait to go to the Sugar Bowl again! Go Vols!

My brothers were there and a nightclub that was owned by a Miami fan would not allow any Tennessee fans to enter. The police were called and they told him that he would have to open to everyone or close.

He ended up sending eveyone out and closed the joint.

I seem to recall a spoof of Glenn Frey's "You Belong to the City" that same season in the lead-up to the Vanderbilt game. It ended with, "The Vols will go to the Sugar Bowl, and Vandy will go to the toilet bowl!" and the sound of a toilet flushing.

That is a loyal fan. Wrong team, but loyal.

This. I was a kid but remember the 16-14 bama game and this game. My father was so upset because none gave us a chance in fact someone (can't remember who) said we didn't belong on the same Field as the Canes.

As it turned out. We, in fact, didn't belong on the same field with them, just not for the reasons everybody was giving.

The sweet part is that with a win they would have probably been National Champions that year. They won against Oklahoma earlier in the season.

I can still remember one of the announcers prior to the game saying something close to "as soon as Miami beats UT they'll be undisputed national champs." He said it in a way that made it obvious he felt it was a foregone conclusion. I lived in California at the time, so the win was escpecially sweet.

Yep. General consenus was that they were trying to hand the championship to Miami. The big mistake they made was letting the UT players and coaches find out. Oklahoma still owes us for that gift btw.

Has anyone heard the Miami version, it pretty hilarious considering we kill them. You can hear it at the beginning of the full game video on YouTube.

Announcers, Fank Broyles and Keith Jackson, Jackson said something to the effect that Miami had beaten Notre Dame last game of the season a whoppin 58 to 7 "Whoa Nellie" when they win this here game, there's no question their National Champs ....now back to you Frank.....:lolabove:

Just watched this on YouTube last night. I was born in 92 so a little before my time. If you listen to the broadcasters you would think UM was playing themselves.

It was like that the whole week leading up to the game. Nobody gave us a chance, which is why it is still my favorite Vol win of all time.

Uh, yeah. Last 8 years. Not a lot to choose from. Take it from us old guys. There have been a LOT of great UT games to choose from. This one happens to be my favorite too.
