Among a handful of suggested format changes being considered by Bowl Championship Series members is an informal proposal that would radically change the structure of the BCS and significantly alter the major bowl selection process.

According to sources with direct knowledge of meetings held in San Francisco earlier this week, the suggested change calls for the BCS to sever its direct ties with the so-called BCS bowls -- the Allstate Sugar Bowl, Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Discover Orange Bowl and Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio -- and concentrate solely on arranging a No. 1 vs. No. 2 national championship matchup.

BCS proposes only handling national championship game, sources say - ESPN

I would be thrilled if this happened. The major bowls have become incredibly watered down since the BCS took over.

The tie-ins are contracts between the conferences and the bowl games, right? So even if the "Big 6" no longer have AQ status, the tie-ins between Rose-Big10/Pac12, Sugar-SEC, Fiesta-Big12, and Orange-ACC are still there. So this proposal would only change (1) Big East isn't AQ, and (2) no automatic status for teams with a minimum BCS rank (i.e., non-AQ schools, ND).

Exactly. At least now we won't get a barely ranked UConn playing Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.

Now, if they will put all the major bowls back on New Year's Day, life will be grand.

The rich will get richer. That's all I get from that.

You want a radical change. Here's one, you don't play for a NC unless you win your conference. I don't care how much tradition your program has.

This would make it more difficult for teams like Boise to reach the biggest bowls. For all of the justified complaining their supporters have done over the BCS, their chances of making it to a "BCS bowl" are much greater now than they were before the BCS.

Yep, the BCS would be cut out and if the major bowls decided the Big East wasn't a good draw anymore, they would just cut them out.

The tie ins are currently worked between the conferences, the bowls and the BCS. The BCS would be cut out and automatic bids into major bowl games would now just be a deal between the conferences and the bowls.

As long as Oregon doesn't get a rematch just because they played LSU out of conference and play in a worse conference.

Should just be no rematches for a championship at all then. After essentially losing to LSU by 20, Oregon should not go over Bama if those are the choices, period.

This thought just crossed my mind as a possibility... What if all the bowls were played with their regular tie ins, and THEN the BCS selected the two best teams for a championship game?

LSU and Alabama are the two best teams in the country and it's not even close.

Why should the SEC #2 get punished because the SEC #1 is 3 points better? Alabama would still win every other conference and it wouldn't even be close.

Speculation aside (not that I don't agree Bama is the 2nd best team in the country) but you really don't think a team should win their own conference as a qualification to play for the BCSMNC?

I'm sure this will be successful just like all the other BCS BS over the past 12-13 years. Not sure what the answer is, but the BCS isn't it, imo.
