Bearden RB Devrin Young Commits to Tennessee!

Some of you guys act as though we have one scholarship remaining and the coaches had to decide between this kid and a DT. It's way more complicated than that, and I think they have a good feel for what's out there and who fills our needs best.

Knowing Devrin there are a few things you should know about him, he has always wanted to go to a school with mostly warm weather (i.e. Oregon, UCLA). His offer to Stanford has faltered with him slightly after they signed two rb's in the 2010 class. TBH he was put off of UT a tad after being ignored, but he is stoked about Dooley and this new Tennessee program.

This kid is shifty and makes people miss in the open field, I don't know the first thing about high school ball in that area so I can't comment on the competition. He looks very quick and his burst into full stride is amazing. Whether or not that makes him SEC material is beyond me, I'm no scout but this staff obviously thinks he can contribute and he obviously wants to be here.

We do have some glaring needs and his offer list isn't great. Does that mean we found something that others missed or does it mean that we are reaching?

See Charlie Garner...he always hit the hole at full speed.

Let's see he's an inch shorter than Demps.
Demps shrunk an inch after high school profile.
Demps runs a 4.46
Young runs a 4.5
Who Knows.
Might make a skat.
Looks quick to me.

I was responding to the 1st video posted. Then I saw the 2nd set of clips. Runs like a bat out of hell.

He's fast, but there are injury concerns obviously. Harvin seemed like he was constantly injured at UF, and Demps has injury problems too.

McCluster also had injuries problems at Ole Miss. The reason he didn't explode until the second half of last year is because Nutt and Co. were afraid he'd get hurt if they gave him the ball too much.

2 DTs is all we need? Interesting...and it's not a given that Walls will respond well after coming back from that Achilles injury.

Intersting only because you are trying to make out my comments to be something they aren't.

I didn't say we had good depth at DT in any post. I said we have worse depth issues at returner than at DT. The entire reason I used DT as my example is because our depth is so bad there. Everryone knows and has talked about our depth there is bad, but we do have guys on the roster who have had some success there.

I know we have a depth problem there. I was using it to illustrate we have even worse issues returning kicks. An honest reading of my comments should have made that clear.

Sophomore highlights aren't impressive but his senior highlights on Rivals are very impressive. He's extremely fast but this probly means we're missing on other targets at RB.

maybe but we have more holes right now than we can fill with 25 players

And Young will play a crucial role in bringing us SPEED something UT desperately needs. I'm sure that Ole Miss fans weren't upset that McCluster came there when Orgeron had to be talked into taking him.

We need a slot guy, we need a fast RB, we need a KR/PR.

If we get Young, Buie, and Dallas then that is huge for addressing a big need.

We will still sign 5 DTs (Hopefully Wright, Johnson, and a JUCO).

We will still get enough OLs.

We will still have room for the big guys (Clear, Richardson, Wright, Johnson, etc...)

And this doesn't take away from the fact that we look to be taking 5 DTs. So again tell us how this is relevant?

So if you watch Oku and Young's highlights, you see a clear difference? Because I don't. and we see how Oku has turned out as a returner.

We seem to have so many return specialists on this team...Perhaps someone's highlight reel against the poorest of the poor (high school kick coverage) shouldn't be used as a sole basis for who should return kicks for UT.

He obviously has never been too oregon.

interesting you think we fill all that with 9 spots

Yes, Young has better vision. Also, Young is a natural kick returner while Oku is more suited for watching for a line to open a hole. That's why OKU has failed back there because he plays the KR position like he's a RB. The thing is you can't be patient and wait to see a seam before you turn on the jets when returning.

Let's list UT's past "return specialists" that I have seen mentioned:

Gerald Jones
David Oku
Zach Rogers
Denarius Moore
Justin Hunter(because of his track skills)

I'm sure there are more that I missed.

How have they worked out so far? And I have seen people say they were sure fire hits in the return game.

We have exactly zero speed on this team.

But the coaches knew they weren't return specialist if you saw their comments in practices. The coaches know that this guy can help there.

Not following you here. I said it was a good offer because we have even worse depth at returned than at DT.

We have 25 signees for this class, not including JUCO's or back counting scholarships.

We've got something like 15 commitments not including young. Two are DT's. Three are OL.

If Young signs, that leaves 10 scholarships left to get 3 tackles.

How does Young being offer take away from us taking 5 DT's?

You've seen zero speed because there's no chance for the runner to get to his top speed. We've got the speed, but if the runner doesn't get a hole in the coverage, he won't get much yardage
