Bearden RB Devrin Young Commits to Tennessee!

I'm on the fence with this one. I understand we want big uglies, but we need a lot of speed too. We have talent, but they are neither really big or fast in a lot of positions. After the Cobb whiff, this might be someone we need to take a chance on. If we improve the return game, we would be in good position.

Not following you here. I said it was a good offer because we have even worse depth at returned than at DT.

We have 25 signees for this class, not including JUCO's or back counting scholarships.

We've got something like 15 commitments not including young. Two are DT's. Three are OL.

If Young signs, that leaves 10 scholarships left to get 3 tackles.

How does Young being offer take away from us taking 5 DT's?

Sorry I must've quoted wrong person that was in reference to the person saying we need more tackles. This offer doesn't take away a spot from a tackle.

The runner finds/makes a hole IMO.

And most of our skill position players returned punts in high school, some of which probably looked better than Young. The fact that you can return a punt against slow, unathletic sophomores from BFE HS, TN doesn't mean you'll be able to do it against the coverage of the Gators or Bulldogs. It takes good blocking, quickness, and vision to get the opportunity to showcase your speed. Speed is the last problem we have

I disagree, we have been noticeable slower then the top tier SEC teams for a few years now.

In the film I've seen he gets run down by everyone.

You should probably watch more film on him. Granted he isn't outrunning the fastest competition but in a lot of his highlights he just flat beats people to the corner and outruns them.

Look at the film off of the Main Page > Blogs > Devrin Young of the site. He isn't getting run down all over the place.

A lot of people seem to be looking at his Sophomore highlight reel.

Speed Kills..........PERIOD! In pads his speed is freakish.........can't coach that.....it is a special gift from above.

Are you referring to watching our defense getting beaten by a McCluster-type who would break a 60 yard run?

Didn't think about it but I suppose. I have just noticed a drop in top athletes over the years as most of us have. I think we could use a guy like Young who is a tremendous athlete and is supposed to have a great work ethic as well as being a good student. We don't have many players on our offense that have his agility and acceleration, that I have seen anyway.

Chris Donald was also one we just had to get because he was from TN

Yeah, would you rather take a chance on in state talent and them ending up being no good, or leave them alone like we did Randall and end up being a star elsewhere?

His speed is noticeable but nowhere near as impressive as his ability to shift on the move, make people miss and set the defender up for an impossible angle to tackle. Will that translate to the next level? I don't know but I certainly hope so.

we offered Cobb. Who else fits that mold?

and I would rather us get the best players regardless of location. Him being from my old HS in Knox doesn't make me cheer for him any more

I can see both sides of the argument, I will admit that offering this kid now looks an awful lot like settling because the staff felt we weren't in good shape with better recruits, hope I'm wrong here and the staff felt they saw something others are missing.

The way I see it is consistent breakdowns in tackling and blocking. We have the playmakers to get away from the competition, but if they don't have good blocking lanes, it won't matter. In the same way, we have the talent on defense to keep up with fast (not lightning fast) players, but if we have an open-field tackle and miss it, there's good chance it'll take 30 yards to get to that player

I agree about the pad speed. People look at 40 times too much and forget about how much different it is to run with a helmet, shoulder pads, thigh pads, cup, hip pad, and tail bone pad with a ball under one arm.

Its a completely different kind of running. Yes, they have a high correlation, but it isn't the same thing.

I would like nothing more than to have found an overlooked kid with a chip on his shoulder who comes to UT and has a great career. It's just the timing that makes me wonder

Yeah a lot of it is poor fundamentals and lack of experience at this point. It never hurts to have tremendous athletes though. As far as Young, I have just seen a growing trend of using small yet agile and fast players and it being very successful. He would be a great change of pace guy, just try and get him out in the open or in one on one match-ups. I think he's worth the scholarship JMO.

Devron Young is a sleeper in the sense he is small, but I have seen him in person the last 2 years and he has found an extra gear this year and is really unstoppable and would be a real threat as a returner or in the slot. He is fast and elusive and he is a Tennessee product. Lord knows there are not that many that are DI material. Young is because he works to get better, is a good kid, and is coachable.
