I assume most of us have heard by now that VCU runs a full-court press.

My question for the Volnation board is if you think our superior athletes will be able to break the press and finish strong around the basket

or

Due to our obvious flaws handling the ball, passing the ball and catching the ball we are defeated by the VCU press

If you don't take care of the basketball it doesn't really matter how athletic you are.

They will force some turnovers, but not anywhere the number they forced against Wake. I'd be shocked if the coaches haven't been emphasizing ball control over anything else this week.

I would disagree, against a press your movement without the basketball is every bit as important as your movement with it. This is a prime example of where athleticism can help you beat your man and get you in position to distance yourself from the defender thus eliminating the on-ball pressure.

From what I have seen this year with our backcourt's inability to control the ball, I dont see how the VCU press isnt going to create major problems for us.

I think it will cause a bunch of problems because we don't take good care of the ball. However, I like that the staff has had a week to prepare for it and that it's similar to the ones that UF has used and we've beat. I think we'll be fine.

And if you don't take care of the basketball (turning the ball over) it doesn't matter where people are. Athleticism has nothing to do with knowing where to be.

You can be athletic and not have a clue of the correct spot to be in.

We don't have toddlers out there dribbling the ball or something. If we position ourselves well and use our speed, strength and size advantages (ex. screens, out running your defender and exploiting size mismatches on the inbounds) we can exploit the press.

so you're taking C then and saying that the coaches won't be getting the players in the right position to break the zone?

We have had more turnovers than assists in two of our three games. We had 27 turnovers against Belmont alone.

I'm not taking A,B, C or Z. It's not difficult; this team has not taken care of the BB regardless of where the coaches position them. If they keep turning the ball over, they will struggle.

You need to take care of the ball which is common sense......short, well controlled passes

They have. It has been priority #1 in practice for several days.

Well, that and defense--defense will be a priority year long with this bunch, because that's their key to winning.

Most of this year's struggles haven't been pressure-related, though. They've turned the ball over trying to do too much: charges, dribbling the ball into traffic in the paint, horrendous post-entry passes.

Occasionally a press will actually make a sloppy ballhandling team more careful. For instance, KY under Gillespie was a turnover machine, but when they played UT they knew pressure was coming, and they actually took care of the ball relatively well.

Still, it's fair to be concerned about this team's ability to take care of the ball, especially since Goins remains hurt.

I'm not so sure Tennessee is all that "superior" athletically. Keep in mind the Rams start two BCS transfers in Jamie Skeen (senior out of Wake Forest) and Toby Veal (junior who played at Colorado before going Juco).

How possible starters matchup:

F: Harris 6'8, 220 v. Veal 6'8, 235
C/F: Williams 6'10, 278 v. Skeen 6'9, 240
G: Golden 6'1, 190 v. Rodriguez 5'10, 175
G: Tatum 6'6, 197 v. Nixon 6'4, 210
G: Hopson 6'7, 205 v. Burgess 6'6, 225

We give up some beef at the 5, but otherwise a pretty balanced starting group. I think you'll be surprised by the Rams depth as well. Should be a good game in the Big Apple.
