Belarus government blocking social media sites...

That is the sort of thing I'd like to see the UN curtail if it actually carried any weight... Don't know about others on here, but I do think there is some sort of minimum standard of human rights, and communication and access to information is part of that.

Belarus is about the same as it was as a member of the USSR as far as media/personal freedom go, is it not?

Other states have attempted it (Egypt, Libya, Iran, etc etc) and it hasn't 'completely' stopped everyone.

And before everyone blasts me on here, what is more effective than limiting someones access? Flooding it, join in and start creating meeting points all over the place and disperse the crowd that way.

Your tax dollars at work......

China is just too slow to block it yet...they will. China does not like things from the west. They will likely if they have not already create a state sponsored social networking site.

China also severely filters Google and other search engines. North Korea is a closed system.

You're okay with governments denying citizens access to websites like facebook or google under penalty of arrest?

never said I was ok with it but it is not a basic human right as you and the UN are claiming. I am also against the UN having any sort of control or say in anyone's affairs

I know that when dealing with a conservative, the second anybody says the word "UN" that they will likely discredit whatever comes out afterwards, even if the phrase is "the sky is blue." So let me make this clear...

Not advocating for the UN, just saying that I (and apparently you) agree with them in that interference to internet and most website access is something governments should have no interference in... Again, to be perfectly clear, not necessarily advocating for the UN, just agreeing on this one idea as a matter of principle.

Not advocating for the UN.

Again, not advocating for the UN.

my comment was not about the access it was about your human right part. The UN making any comment on human rights is funny though
