Ben Howland Fired

Disagree, it’s a solid job. Howland’s time there has been rather unremarkable. One tournament appearance in seven years isn’t going to cut it.

My point is they fired a guy with 6 appearances in 14 years and the guy before him had 3 appearances in 12 years. Stansbury level results are about what they should expect and it wasn’t good enough for them; he owns over half their NCAAT appearances. Howland didn’t even match that level of winning so I sort of understand the move but they need to be realistic about their ceiling.

Howland likely would’ve had 2 appearances if 2019-20 hadn’t been cancelled.

I honestly think Miss State is the toughest SEC basketball job.

I do think a good coach can win at almost any P5 job (see Baylor - used to be a cellar dweller, won national title last year), but Miss State isn't positioned near any major basketball hub, doesn't have the resources of the bigger SEC brands, has no history, and no one wants to live in Starkville. It's one thing to convince a kid from NYC to come down to Knoxville, Nashville, or Athens, Quite another to convince them to live in Starkville.

It's easily the toughest sell in the SEC for basketball.

It's a difficult job, but that doesn't mean you don't try.

He wasn't getting it done. See if someone else can.

Mississippi State and Georgia are the two toughest jobs in the SEC.

I honestly don't think Georgia is a tough job at all. They've just made a lot of bad hires. Georgia's lack of success in basketball is almost inexplicable. They are near Atlanta, the best place in the Southeast for basketball recruiting. Athens is one of the best college towns in America. They have great facilities. They have a ton of resources. There's no reason Georgia should be anywhere near as bad as they have been historically.

Every school in America recruits Atlanta. Almost all have better basketball tradition & facilities than Ga. Every city practically has a direct flight to & from Atl so getting home or family coming to you is an hour or two flight. Just being 45 mins from Atl doesn’t mean Ga is a gold mine.

My sister went to MSU so I’ve been to Starkvegas a few times, and unless you’ve been there, it really is hard to overstate how much Starkville sucks. The only worse town might be Columbia, SC.

Their baseball stadium makes LNS look like a peewee field though.
