David Beckam (Hope I am spelling that right) is going to play for the Galaxy in whatever soccer league that they are in for $250 million for 5 years. Anyone else think that is a ridiculous amount for someone to play a sport that ranks behind several other sports in the U.S. in terms of popularity?

I don't know, $250 dollars seems like a steal to me, especially when you stretch it out over 5 years..

I'm not much of a soccer fan, except come world cup time. 250 mil for his US popularity is very pricey. For his worldwide fame, not so much so.

the only problem is that MLS is considered a joke by all the soccer playing countries of the world. i find it a very weird move by Beckham.

They said on ESPN that he is 34, so I can't imagine that he has too many years left. Maybe he is taking the money while it is there.

well for starters the number isn't finalized and it also already includes his commercial endorsements. With all his commercial endorsements on the other side of the pond, I wonder how much of an increase it is.

This looks reminiscent of the deal that brought Wayne Gretzky to LA later in his career.

Isn't 31 in soccer, like pushing 40 in baseball and football?

I think it's all a stunt to get soccer popular in the USA which will fail, again. Mainstream sports has no room for soccer and hockey seems like it's getting pushed out more and more.

I remember when I was younger I could name about 20-30 hockey players. Now, I couldn't name 1 or 2.

I actually could name more current soccer players than current hockey players.

the LA Galaxy can cover $10mil over 5 years, easy. the other $200mil comes from endorsements and such, which means the guy will be the face of the sport in the USA.

the Galaxy had 2000 season ticket orders today. by MLS standards, that's a lot.

will it work? we shall see.

Beckenbauer the "Kaiser" also came over for a little while. This is kind of like the place elephants go to die but can make a little money and spread their name around at the end of their career.

What's that sound? The roar of soccer popularity in America increasing by 0.0001%

I figured out at lunch today that Beckham will be making $1.50 a second with this deal. I repeat: $1.50 A SECOND.

I'll ask him to buy me a Coke.

Fantastic deal for Beckham... $50 million dollars a year to end his career in Los Angeles. He's probably not even the best player on the Galaxy anyways, Landon Donovan is better than Beckham.
