I was young, but I saw him play in Stokely. When I was a freshman at UTK a dozen or so years later, and the first thing you had to do every semester was sweat your ass off for two hours in Stokely to pick up your schedule, while I was standing in line I thought about seeing Bernard King play there. When I lived on campus and walked by Stokely I thought about Bernard King every time; every time I drive by Stokely now, I still think about Bernard King. A bunch of other guys, sure -- Dale Ellis and Howard Wood and Michael Brooks and Tony White and more -- but when I see Stokely, the first guy I think about is Bernard King.
I know it doesn't mean anything as far as winning, but the fact that King is back involved with the program, talking to our guys, etc. just makes me giddy from a ridiculous hero-worship standpoint. I'm almost 40 years old; I don't have any heroes anymore -- except, apparently, for Wayne Grezkty and Dale Murphy and Bernard King. It's really nice to see King back in Knoxville.
