Best:
Clemson- Brad Brownell. Had Wright State consistently competing for supremacy in the Horizon against the Butlers and Cleveland States of the world. Before that, he took UNCW to the big dance twice. He'll be a hell of a lot better than Purnell.
Boston College- Steve Donahue. Good coach? Absolutely. Crap job? Yes. Nobody cares about BC basketball in the land of the Patriots, Celtics, Bruins, and Red Sox. BC is lucky to have Donahue, but Donahue may not be so lucky to have BC.
Wake Forest- Jeff Bzdelik. The ACC really racked up this year in replacing three incompetents with the three best hires of the offseason. Bzdelik was on his way to getting Colorado into the big dance and leaves behind freshman sensation Alec Burks. Something tells me Bzdelik wouldn't have wasted the years of Aminu, Teague, and Smith like Dino Gaudio did.
Worst:
DePaul- Oliver Purnell. It blows my mind when incompetent retreads procure relatively solid jobs. Alas, that's what happened in Chicago this offseason. Will the school of Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummings, Rod Strickland, and George Mikan please hire someone who doesn't have a history of meltdowns and mediocre recruiting next time around?
St. John's- Steve Lavin. Another retread who couldn't even get it done at UC-freakin'-LA. If he, like hatvol96 suggested he might, hires Mo Hicks, he improves his chances of success drastically. No reason for St. John's not to be annually perched in the top half of the BE.
Oregon- Dana Altman. This one was just a letdown. All the waiting for a nondescript, solid yet unspectacular Jay. Altman won't collapse the program, but the Ducks won't be reaching any Elite 8s or Final 4s whilst he's employed in Eugene.
Most Interesting:
Central Arkansas- Corliss Williamson. One would think the stud of Nolan Richardson's sole national championship team would have a solid ability to attract and orocure some decent talent, but Central Arkansas isn't exactly Duke or Kansas, and Conway isn't exactly Madison Avenue or Vegas. If he succeeds, I'll be impressed, but I'm not counting on it.
