This is an interesting twist on all the pie in the sky rankings that you usually see. Tony Barnhart actually interviewed former SEC coaches to compile the list. I think it's pretty much dead on and should be required reading for all Alabama fans.

I really think LSU and UT are interchangeable on the list. I would have them 2 and 3. I would keep Auburn at 4, and move Georgia to 5. I don't think Athens has a very broad appeal.

Even if you discount the two sec championships in the past couple years, you still have a lot of advantages there.

1. Lots of money
2. Lots of exposure...playing in the sec east, and the dominate college team in metro-atlanta
3. Getting almost as much talent as uf and lsu every year
4. Rules the talent in the state of georgia, which is considerable
5. Stadium sits 92,000
6. Has one less player in the nfl then ut
6. Athens is the best college town in terms of bars in the sec
7. 34,000 students means LOTS of beautiful women
8. Only a hour from Atlanta

I would have probably moved LSU into a tie with Georgia for 2, and otherwise kept things the same down to Kentucky and MSU, which I would have switched.

makes sense. I can see how its hard to recruit when the other schools can take most their talent in state where as we sign 5-6 instate boys a year.

We are talking about a coach, not a frat boy.

Although we certainly do not have the "in-state" recruiting base of Florida, Georgia, or LSU, I think drawing a line around the state of Tennessee might be a little misleading, as well. We have gone into the border areas of North and South Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia pretty well over the years, and while these players might not be in-state, they are pretty much home grown.

There is a disadvantage for Tennessee compared some of the more talent rich states, but I'm not sure it is as broad as the "players by state" numbers would have us believe.

I agree cotton, but even with that being said, one really shouldn't move UT up the list as compiled by Barnhardt. 4th, on those criteria, is quite the accomplishment... and Sherril's quote...
"That makes it tough, but Tennessee has proven that it can be done."
gives credit for a lot of hard work by a lot Tennessee staffers....

List looks about right to me. Can argrue points for and against some but by the criteria Barnhardt used we are about fourth. Fulmer has had it nice the last 8 years and hope last year was his wake up call to get back into gear for SECG's.

Oh, yes, I agree. 4th is about right, and it is more difficult recruiting in Knoxville than in Baton Rouge, Gainesville, or Athens because of the lack of base. I was simply pointing out that our base extends beyond the state lines in some places, and credit for that should be given to the staff, as well.

How long is Butch Davis going to let the Vols poach along the Blue Ridge Parkway? T.Bowden and Spurrier are already shutting S.Carolina (UT has not got a SC kid since the 2004 class). Garner pretty much locked the door behind him when he crossed the TN-GA border. Every Vol fans knows about the difficulties UT has in recruiting Memphis. I agree that recruiting is a major challenge for the UT head coach and it's probably not going ot be getting any easier.

Anyone that has been to Ole Miss for a football game that has reasonably warm weather would agree that that is the best coaching job in the SEC.:)

Cutcliffe might disagree. I have several good friends who are deeply involved as Ole Miss alums and I can tell you that those folks are every bit as hungry to return to the Vaught heyday as the Bama fans are for a reincarnation of the Bear.

I don't follow recruiting nearly enough, but I think the western North Carolina door exists simply because so many kids around there have taken Tennessee as their own. If that is true, Butch is going to need a good deal of time to stem that kind of emotional tide...

In my opinion, they were much closer to reliving that heyday before the "upgraded" their coaching staff.

Probably not, but it has never been exactly easy. By my count (and with the help of the Rivals commitment list,) so far for '07 commits by state we have:

TN-8
VA-4
FL-3
CA-3
NC-2
MD,MI,OK-1 each

I know that prep schools and JUCOs make some of those "hometowns" misleading, but so far it looks like another version of a fairly successful formula; of the 23 commits, we have 14 from Tennessee or border states, a handful from Florida and California (toss Texas into that group as well,) and a few from everywhere else.

I dont follow recruiting that well, that has to be a hard job to persuade a young kid that this is the place he should play ball and he's got so many college's coming at him, especially when he's a talented kid. I would think teams like OHIO STATE, USC, and TEXAS would have an easier time cause they seem to be in a BCS game.

the in-state talent in Tennessee does seem to be rising every year but lets face it, if it was a normal recruiting year we would have only offered about half of these guys. We paniced a little bit when we werent getting anybody early so we took a bunch of guys that we normally wouldnt have.

I agree with most the "experts" who say that this is a very good year for HS prospects in TN. It's natural for UT to go after more in-state guys when there is a bumber crop of talent (3* rating requires talent and hard work IMO). Of course, the talent level may not be there next year or the year after so out-of-state channels must be available.
