With all the talk of best of the decade I couldn't remember if anyone had done the best of this year. IMO it's been a pretty subpar year in film. My favorites have been:
The Hurtlocker
Zombieland
Avatar
Inglorious Bastards
Paranormal Activity
District 9
Moon
Adventureland

The best movie out of that bunch was The Hurtlocker

The Hangover
Adventureland

The Great Buck Howard
Inglorious Basterds
500 Days of Summer
Fighting
An Education
Up in the Air
I Love You Man

Inglorious Basterds and Zombieland had to have been the funniest movies I saw this year.

I need to add Away We Go to my list. I still can't make myself interested in Avatar. Don't exactly know why.

if you've seen Ferngully, Battle for Terra and/or Dances With Wolves, you've seen Avatar.

Yet it's made over $70 million in each of its 1st 3 weeks with little dropoff. Special effects or not, people want to see it and its getting great word of mouth.

Up
Zombieland
The Hangover
Star Trek
Inglorious Basterds

At least these are good.

that doesn't make it a good movie, by all accounts, the Transformers movies were awful, but made big bucks at the box office. The same can be said for Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones in the Star Wars saga. Ditto for the Pirates' franchise.

99% of the time, I can ignore the politics of the director or the talent in the movie. It's hard to do that with Avatar because James Cameron's hypocrisy is so blatant. He decries big corporations, yet I doubt he's having any problems cashing the checks he's receiving from McDonald's, Regal, Carmike, and so on.

All that said, I want to see Avatar too, though I will have to see it in 2D (I wear glasses and don't like the 3D goombas that have to be used)

True, but it's also gotten mostly good reviews from many critics and moviegoers unlike the others mentioned. My dad and I are conservative, especially him, and we weren't really offput by any of Cameron's political messages. My dad also wears glasses and said the 3D ones didn't bother him.

Avatar in 2D...no way I'd want to sit through that.

I know, but, I have some depth perception problems in my right eye (amblyopia) and unless Cameron's new 3d technology includes new 3d glasses, I'm going to have to see it in 2d.

When is the last time you've tried? Have you seen any of the new 3d movies with circular polarized glasses? I have a buddy in the same situation. He's going to at least try catching it in 3D this weekend to see if it works for him. I'll let you know if he has success.
