Jeff Gordon, one of the top 3 drivers of all-time, Jimmie Johnson, a great driver and champion, Dale Earnhardt Jr., who knows how good he is with top-notch equipment, and Casey Mears, a young guy who has some upside, should make an extremely dominant team. Is this the best NASCAR team ever assembled?

I'm not ready to call them the greatest team ever just yet. Gordon is clearly one of the top 3 all-time greatest and like you said Johnson has one championship and will probably get a few more. Despite Jr being one of the most popular drivers of all-time he has never been a serouis championship threat. Now that could be because of DEI's equipment, we'll see. They definatley have the potential to be the greatest racing team of all-time.

He finished 5th in the points that year after leading the points during the Chase. He finished 3rd in 2003 behind Kenseth and Johnson. Kenseth had that huge lead early in the season while Jr., Johnson, and others battled for second.

yeah, he has finished in the top 5 twice, i'd consider that "contending".

he can win races, we know that. but over the past 3 years there has been a disparity in the cars that he's had vs. JG and JJ......so short of going to Rousch, Hendrick seemed to be the only logical step imo to even the feild so to speek.

Does anyone think Jr. is just overrated? Gordon is the greatest driver to step into a car since Sr. and the King. Gordon has better equipment, but he is just a better racer than Jr. Gordon was a 9 time National Champion in either Sprints or Midgits. Gordon had not driven a late-model in 16 years and he goes to Eldora and finishes 3rd. That is impressive.

He also finished 5th in the points last year as well, but I don't believe anyone is under the illusion that 2006 was anywhere near as good of a season for him as 2004.

It really depends on what kind of scale you want to use to rate him. If you were one of the fans who expected Jr. to come right in and win championships like his father, then yes, he is vastly overrated. If you were willing to give Jr. a fair shake and look at him like any other driver then you could say he's had a fairly decent career thus far. He may or may not win a championship and it would just depend on how you look at it as to whether or not you want to call him overrated.

It's unfair however to compare him, or any other driver, to Jeff Gordon. No one has won at the rate.

How much history does the notion of a NASCAR team of drivers actually have? How can a group of anything that has been around less than 20 years have a 'best ever' list?

Am I wrong about this?

:dunno:

no, and "teams" don't win the championships......individuals do, thus basically irrelevent.

Oh yeah? Put Jeff Gordon or even Dale Sr. in what's now Petty Enterprise or a team like Evernham and tell me they would win a championship.

i didn't say there wasn't a difference in equipment, only that the "team" concept is irrelevent in sport that has individual champions, not "team" championships, ie football, baseball, basketball etc.....

is that clear now????

Exactly... to make it even more clear, Jimmie Johnson doesn't get a championship ring/trophy if Jeff Gordon wins a championship.

yeah but if Jimmie goes to qualify and has a POS car, hes been known to borrow Gordons setup and go out and win the race

they are going to turn into the New York Yankees of Nascar...I personally think it hurts the sport cause I remember watching Nascar and everyone had a shot to win. Now every sunday its the Jimmy Johnson, Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart show just because they are loaded with money which allows them to load up on talent (more than just the driver) Just gets boring. Now it seems that DE jr will join that. He is already seen as a God in NASCAR when he has not won a race in like 2 yrs. Allwell

How many races has Tony Stewart won this year?

Jr. won a race last year and is currently in the longest win-less drought of his career.

While neither have won, you make it out like Jr. has been running around in the back of the pack the whole time. He's been in contention for several wins this season but bad luck has struck or he and the team have made stupid mistakes to cost them a chance for the win. Stewart, Hamlin, and Ku. Busch have all had similar seasons in that regard.

god im tired of this Yankees reference.........ppl go to the yankees bc steinbrenner pays them whatever they want... none of us even know how much Jr is making from Hendrick, it doesnt matter how much he gets... he has his own race team, and any sponsers he wants... he doesnt need the money, he went there bc hendrick will treat him right.......and the Tony Stewart show???? have u watched a race this year?

As one recent article I read, "Jr is just an average driver." Now that he'll supposedly have the "so-called same equipement" as Jeff/Jimmie/Caey, how well will he do? Will he be a consistent top 5? How long will it be before he'll win a Cup Championship? Jr is nowhere as half as good as his dad. He's a driver that struggles with the equipment he has. How is it that Martin Truex, Jr seems to be doing better? Is it that now that Jr is leaving DEI that Truex is getting better equipment?
As far as the "best driver" Jeff may be good -and I'm a Jeff Gordon fan-but I'll say that Richard may be the "BEST DRIVER" ever. 7 Nascar Championship, 200 wins and one other outstanding record that may never be broken -won 10 straight races. Incredible!  Of course, Richard was just one driver.

i'd say the year Rousch put all 5 drivers in the Chase would qualify as best team ever.

that said, i'm with everybody else in regards to the whole team thing.
