List a few of your favorite songs, albums, or music videos from '09. And please, keep Taylor Swift and Black Eyed Peas out of this discussion.

Here are a few of my favorite tracks...

Animal Collective - What Would I Want? Sky
The more I hear this song, the more I love it. They really went all out on this one. The dissonance, along with all the things going on in the background, really blows my mind. It's one of those songs that you can just let take you away. I would rate this song up there with one of animal collective's best, and thats a bold statement considering their success in the past. Animal Collective is an indie-pop-rock rock band with a tinge of crazy, chaotic goodness and has been around for many a year. If you're looking to spice up your music collection a bit, this a good band to look into.

Yeasayer - Amblin' Alp
Yeasayer is relatively new band. They released their debut album in '08 I believe and have been steadily increasing in popularity over the past year. Their sound is a bit exotic. I would categorize it as modern indie rock with strong world, middle eastern, and choir influences. This particular song has a more pop-y sound than the tracks on their debut album, but don't get me wrong - it has just the right blend of pop with some great vocals to keep me sane. The lyrics are pretty great, as well. Look out for Yeasayer in the future, they've got a lot of talent.

Modest Mouse - The Whale Song
Modest Mouse has still got it. After the last album, I started to get the feeling that Modest Mouse had lost its magic. Maybe it was partly because Isaac Brock was just getting sick of it all, or maybe it was them selling out to music producers / fame, or perhaps it was just Modest Mouse trying to hard to be Modest Mouse, or hell, maybe it was a combination of all of the above. Whatever the case, it's pretty obvious in this new song that MM hasn't forgotten it's roots. If you're a devout MM fan and you hear the raw, gritty guitar wailing (hence the name, "The Whale Song") you can't help but think of their earlier material (This Is A Love Drive / The Moon and Antarctica). Also with the addition of Johnny Marrs (guitarist from The Smiths) to the line-up it makes their upcoming work a little more intriguing.

Grizzly Bear - While You Wait for the Others
I don't know much about Grizzly Bear, but I do know a great song when I hear one. This song has it all. The buildup, tempo, lyrics, finish and the instrumentals are all top-notch. You certainly won't be dissapointed with this one...

Vampire Weekend - Cousins
Ay! Ay! Ay! Ay! -- Vampire Weekend shows a lot of potential as a band if they can keep it together. All their songs have that happy, without-a-care-in-the-world sing-along feel to 'em and I think that was a major reason for their mainstream success. Another good uplifting track that is on par with their debut album material if you ask me. Look into Vampire Weekend if you haven't yet, they're worth your time.

Favorite music video...

Modest Mouse - King Rat
First of all you have to know that this video was directed by Heath Ledger. Everything is hand drawn and down-right crazy brilliant. The video is worth watching for that feature alone, in my opinion. I don't care much for the song, though, it has grown on me lately...however the video is fantastic. It gives you a pretty good idea of how ****ed in the head Heath Ledger was...but I don't mean for that to come across as mean...Heath Ledger was a brilliant man with a mean streak of crazy in him, that's all.

As for favorite albums, well I haven't had the chance to listen to any new albums from '09 so I can't comment.
