Big Name = Has Been ?

It seems like everyone these days says they want a big name. But are guys like Butch Davis, Tommy Tuberville, Bobby Petrino the kind of "big names" you want? Doesn't it seem likely that these guys have already hit their ceiling? Do you really think they have much ability/desire to grow and improve at this point in their careers? Why?

It seems to me like this obsession with a "big name", is going to lead us to someone on the downside of their career.

I agree. I think it would be another up and comer. Until TN as a whole is better.

At this point, I don't think it will be an up and comer. I think it will be Petrino or Davis or someone else who was recetly fired. I would prefer an up and comer who has had success everywhere they have been. We've yet to try that model and I think it could work very well.

If they aren't young the new HC better be fired up to work hard. UT has to work harder at recruiting than any of the other big boys in the conference.

I think the recruiting issue is often overstated. Majors, Fulmer, and Kiffin were all able to attract very highly ranked classes. But yeah, I want someone who will bring energy to the program, like Kiffin did. I don't want some old guy who may turn into Jerry Green in a few years.

Kiffin? GTFO. That's not "energy". All that energy was a mirage. That guy brought VAPORWARE to our program and left a steaming pile of dung to be cleaned up in his wake. ***** him and anybody like him. We need energy but we also need SUBSTANCE.

Apart from that Kiffin rant, I agree mostly with your OP. Those guys won't take us to the next level here. Petrino maybe but I feel like we would be exceedingly foolish to take a risk on him. He's screwed every program he's been involved with.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I despise Kiffin as much as the next guy. But there was excitement there. He had recruits buying in, too. But yeah, Kiffin wasn't a proven winner. That's what we need, more than a big name looking for a second chance, in my opinion.

True...I think 52-53 is about as old as we go.

Call me crazy...and I know you will....Jim Chaney for head coach? He has done a bang-up job this year!

The thing is, if we want to give a coordinator his first HC job, then we should be able to get the best coordinator in the country. That's not Chaney. I think he's done a good job, but he's not the best out there.

But, why give a coordinator with no HC experience the job when there are so many young guys out there who have had success as both a coordinator and as a head coach (Strong, Dykes) or as a head coach at multiple schools (Jones, Hudspeth)?

That's the price you pay for experience. BP is the youngest of the three and the only one I would be ok with. Dont care much for Butch or Tubbs.
