I've never, ever understood why he gets so much blame.
The Sox were up 5-3 and got the first 2 Mets out in the bottom of the 10th.
Schiraldi gave up a hit to Gary Carter, then gave up a hit to Kevin Mitchell. Mitchell was a PH and had even already started undressing before they called him in to hit. Then
Schiraldi gives up another hit to Ray Knight. Then Bob Stanely relieves
Schiraldi and throw a wild pitch to tie the game. Also it's been pointed out he could have picked off Knight to end the game but missed second baseman Marty Barrett's calls to throw it.
So yeah, he missed a grounder that would have kept the game going, but he didn't lose the game for them.
Schiraldi and Stanley had already blown the game, yet for some reason nobody ever seems to give them crap for crapping the bed that got them into that position in the first place.
It's like Cub fans that blamed Bartman; yeah it sucked but he isn't the once who blew a 3-1 lead and completely collapsed.
