I like a couple drops of Angostura bitters to wake up any whiskey, gin, or even less-than-good wine.
Here's how I tried to make my own ...
"Cocktail bitters ... today I tried to make my own recipe of that; we'll know the results in few days after it has had time to steep/infuse. I used 6 ingredients: In a one-pint Mason jar, I put ... 1. orange bell peppers, 4 of em about size of smallish eggs, cut into slivers, about 1/2 cup 2. one dark red beet, about the size of a tennis ball or smaller, cut into about 8 wedges, 3. the zest of one half of a red grapefruit rind (I tasted it ... its bitter) 4. 1 tsp loose herbal tea, Blue Vervain (Verbena hastate) -- its bitter, 5. 1 tsp loose herbal tea, Yarrow (Achillea millefolia) -- its bitter, and finally, 6. Filled up jar with about 8-10 oz. of 190 proof (95 % grain alcohol) "Diesel" brand, not Everclear. After a few days, will filter it, reduce it down in the microwave and taste it. You only use two or three drops in gin, whiskey, bloody mary, etc. to "wake up" the drink."
