They do with less in Hong Kong and other major cities. Some of those spaces are very livable and kind of cool if you want to live in the city at relative low cost.

I lived in a pretty small apt when I first moved after college. All I needed was a place for a tv, fridge, microwave and bed. Saved a bunch of money and had no issues (plus it was much easier to clean when visitors came over). Of course since they're in NYC it's likely they won't turn out like their utopian plans

I only skimmed the article, but it sounds like if developers aren't in, then it won't happen... The idea is reasonable, but not at $2,000 a month for 300 square feet. People who need to start out there and live cheap will just continue to get regular apartments in Brooklyn for half that and commute into Manhattan.

If I was single I could do that. $2000/month seems steep for the space though.

Was that with a kitchen and bathroom in the same area?

no but it had a large built-in desk, 2 built-in closets, 2 beds and a sink. Remove that stuff and there would be quite a bit of extra space for one person

If they could offer those for about $5-700 per month it could bring in a lot of young professionals.

A lot of the people who live in such small spaces don't do much cooking anyway. They eat out most of the time

That was the case in Japan. They heated water for tea in the morning and would have a rice cooker going. Lunch and dinner were either bentos delivered to work or take out, or a quick meal at a restaurant on the way home.
