It is hard to say what he does well. Not a great shooter, not a great penetrator, not a great passer, CERTAINLY not a great defender.
Of all the critiques of Pearl leveled by hatvol and bigpapa etc the most valid IMO is that Bruce Pearl cannot beat a team with a solid backcourt with the players he has brought to the program so far. Some of us are hoping this current recruiting class will be his best yet, but if you look back to the year the Illini crushed UWM, that was a great Illinois team that would have beaten a ton of people but they just exposed that he did not have the talent in the backcourt and if the 3's were not falling he can't win.
If TN has a great defense this year, and if Chism plays as well as we all think he can, and JP Prince for the first time plays defense like his NBA relative instead of like a fat guy in church league, much of the criticism of Pearl will die down.
Pearl cannot practice his pressing d without a deep bench that can simulate what he wants by running two teams against each other. That takes 2 deep at PG, SG, SF, PF and C who can run. We may have that this off season. Brian Williams does not really count, but that is where we are because we took guys like Jurick who did not fit the system at all.
Thank goodness that we are passing on another Chatt big man who is instate but does not seem to fit Pearl's system. He may finally have the profile to recruit the guys we need.
Biggest knock on him by other recruiters is he has not put anyone in the NBA. CJ Watson is not convincing anyone, even though many of us do think Pearl helped him get there.
If Tyler and Wayne can get to the NBA, the new knock will be that he never put a good guard in. Hopson two seasons from now should take that away as well.
Poor JP. He would have to go back to Memphis phenom instead of college washout. Blame injuries, blame illness, but that man will not even get paid highly in Europe if he does not pick it up significantly this year.
