That was AWESOME!!!!!!! I was looking for Gainey, but Mashack DID IT!!!!! - Credit to Rick Barnes & the defense. That “five-seconds” violation on the inbound basically WON the game! - Should have been wearing “shoulder-pads” the way Bama was playing…. But, a Win is a Win! — And it was a BIG one!!!!!

Mashack gets the rebound on the missed free thow by Lanier, gets fouled makes both free throws. Then proceeds to tie up the Alabama ball handler and get a jump ball, which leads to the 5 second violation on the inbounds. Then hits a 30 foot contested dagger for the win. What a great sequence! Mashack is such a great competitor, glad to see him get to shine.

I've been at some loud games before, but wasn't there today and wondered how it compares to 06 Texas, 05 Florida, etc
I was there today. Having grown up around college basketball and been to dozens of arenas around the country, I’ll say this: it seemed like a reactionary, “let’s see what happens” crowd. They got consistently loud the last four minutes at crunch time, particularly on defense. I’ve been to Kentucky-Louisville games, Indiana-Purdue games, Duke, UNC, Final Fours, conference tournaments, NCAA regionals, etc. and those crowds are at a fevered pitch and consistent hum on every possession, no matter who has the ball. Very similar to what we see in the fall at Neyland Stadium.

Today was two top-5 level teams competing for a #1 seed in the NCAAT and there were several times today where it was as quiet as a church. I don’t know if it’s nervousness or newness to the upper echelon of big time college basketball but it was much different from the environments I described above.

All in all it was a great win and we had a blast. You can definitely tell, though, we are not a basketball school. And there’s nothing wrong with that when you’re in the thick of the hunt for a #1 seed and the Final Four. Embrace it and enjoy the ride.

Also, thanks for the response and sharing your experience. Sounds like you've seen some good ball.

I had season tickets for a few years (Pearl and Barnes eras) and I thought TBA was plenty loud and rowdy during the big games but got out of games quickly. I've been to Ke ntucky games but not the other places you've been to so you've got more experience with other places. So you can compare better than Ican, but I was meaning how did todsys environments compare with past Vol bball big games .

I think we are a basketball school, JMO. I've been around here a while and I think there has always been a solid following. Even in the lean years before Pearl we were among the best in attendance on the SEC. Of course, it went to another level with Pearl. The numbers below tell the story. Of course, the two programs above us haven't been in the SEC until this year.

I can respect your point of view. Let me also add that in my four years at UT, the program was abysmal under Houston and O’Neill. Today was my first time in the building for a game in 30 years, so I don’t have the frame of reference you do.

I wasn't discounting your view at all. I appreciate it. Was just sharing mine. If you haven't been since the 90's then I totally understand. I think it's been a very rabid fanbase from bball the last 20 years, but still have been to many games that just didn't seem loud or that fans were engaged.

Listening to Dick Vitale's voice is rough.
It's time to send him out to pasture.
At one point in the broadcast I heard him say: "This is fun Karl. This is fun Jimmy." The man is 85 years old and has beaten cancer four times in the last three years. He's a legend in college basketball. He's also raised over $68 million dollars for cancer research. Let the man have some fun. If you don't like it, don't listen.

I don't mind him announcing and having fun but didn't like the way he was simping for Bama.
Compare the two reactions when Sears hit and when Mayshack hit.
As the broadcast was going off he was still talking about Alabama lol
If he is does that again I will be turning down the broadcast.
Happy he survived cancer and raises a bunch of money, but he can be insufferable to the team not getting glazed.
Which is usually Dook or another Blue Blood.

The defensive effort on the 5 sec call was outstanding ! Might've been play of the game just right there...

For all you ref bashers, it was a ref that made the 5 second call that allowed the Vols to win. He could have swallowed his whistle in that instance.
