Box score from Carson Newman

Collins play was noted she has excellent feet and anticipation.

C-N had open-three looks/shots all evening. Yes many were rushed and the pressing defense was a cause but seldom did the team ever settle into a half-court defense where all five were defending a player. Also noted more than once players didn't run the floor following a steal and break-away. stopped and watched at half-court (looked like the NBA)

Starting guards 0-11 three point range many quick shots.

good exhibition

Yes C-N did have many open looks and I agree about the team needing to work on their defensive stance (I’m talking to you Meme Jackson). All good observations.

Vs. Carson Newman last season

Last season the freshmen scored 76 points as we won 121 to 76. We had 56 rebounds and turned it over 10 times. So quite similar to this year except the score where we held them to 17 fewer points. The biggest negative this year was that they got to the line 28 times only made 18. Last season only 13 times to the line. The take from the game is that were gonna be just as good a team this season as we were last. We look to be a better rebounding team saw a lot more energy going to the boards. The free throw shooting was bad in this game need more info on future games to see if were as bad as we looked shooting them last night. Our dynamic duo looks to be Zay Green and Rennia Davis. JMO the best five we can put on the floor are Green, C. Green, Davis, Westbrook, and Massengill.

I love that starting 5.

In these early games, I like the idea of subbing 5 for 5 early in the game and let the chips fall. The only way the projected non-starters get better is to put them in game situations. With just 10 players, like last year, everyone has to be ready to contribute in case of injury.

Just an observation: I know Collins shots were going in, but against real competition, she is going to get stripped on the ball or have the shot blocked if her current shot form is not adjusted.

Not if she keeps throwing her body into defenders to get the separation she needs to get her shot off or a foul.

It hards to tweak a player shot during the season, and the form didn't look that bad on jumpers, just line drive shot attempts.

I agree with you she can hit the jump shot and she needs the separation to get her shot off. Well next year she will battle with KK and Emily Saunders for the 4 spot

Collins also has gained some muscle since last year. She was always active but she seems to be seeking contact and just aggressive.

Most of their open shots came early in the game. As the team began to get comfortable with their new teammates, they contested and switched much better. Of the open shots that came later, most of them were when CN beat our press and got to the other end ahead of the recovery defense, when they had numbers. It is our post players that have to work on their communication and familiarity because when the press is beaten there will be numbers for the opponent. ((They can practice against numbers with some instructional Nine-Man)).

SV and I watched Collins in amazement. Her shots were shot with a "wind-milling" form and each time one fell, we just looked at each other and said, "What can you do??? they fall!"

Hopefully the coaches have pushed "contact layups" with all of their players.
This is something we badly lacked last year...finishers who could finish layups, either with or without obstructions or defenders... And at full throttle.

The one who impressed me most on this was Ja-Mass...She went in fearless several times and got her finish almost every time..

She (Jaz) is always in (chill) mode! Nothing seems to bother her! Head is always up and looking down court. Her offensive game is mainly 15’ and in . If you don’t stop her she is going to the paint. And at 6’ most guards cannot stop her from getting her shot off and she draws contact for the fouls. She will shoot the three but usually when wide open and if she doesn’t see a better shot for her team mates. She will be a contributor! JMO

We agree on this one....I sat for a moment just now and thought , If I could tell the players just one thing:

Ja-Mass (Jaz): quit "pulling back on reins" on your fast-breaks when there is nothing to stop you from going full out.......Meme: Don't try to force your game, Let it come to you. If it doesn't get there that day, contribute in ways that are working.......Kasi: Recently we had a Godzilla that was not a Godzilla around other Godzillas. We need you to be Godzilla no matter who your playing against.......Rennia: Get to the foulline.......Evina: Last year you seem to labor to move at slow pace. This year you move much more fluid. This has made your lateral movements smoother also.......Cheridene: Excellent outing. Maybe consider incorporating an up-n-under in your arsenal.......Mimi: When you run, think, "Socket to pocket" (eye socket to hip pocket is the path for your hands/thumbs). There is speed in fluidity........Rae: There's room for two Chamique clones on this team!.......Zay: Once is luck, twice is nice, three times is consistency. Can you do it again?and, again?.......Kamera: You are getting a chance, get out there and make something out of it.......The staff: "If fun turns to silly, it is time to go back to work".

Attendance was low at 3,267 -- less than half the number there for last season's game against the same opponent.

Was that the lowest attendance total since the beginning of the modern era?
I believe it’ll get better when we start winning more.

Less than half of the attendance compared to the C-N game last season??? indeed...

It will be interesting to see if that picks up once the real games start...or after the cupcake portion of the schedule passes. Speaking of which, it seems that most of the top teams are feasting on a whole lot of OOC cupcakes. That's no way to grow the sport...
