This happened while we were living in Norway, and was talked about a lot at the time (we primarily got our news from BBC). There were a lot of people very upset and quite convinced that this oil deal was related to the release.

Despite the controversy over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and Megrahi's release, it emerged over the weekend that BP is planning deep-water drilling off Libya.

So the bottom line is that Obama is banning deep water drilling in US waters (no new shallow water permits being issued btw) but helps facilitate deep water drilling in Libyan waters.

What is new is the release of a letter the US government sent to Scottish authorities, proving that they were well aware of the bomber's impending release, and found it "far preferable" to the bomber's being transferred to a Libyan prison.

The release was said to be on "compassionate grounds," since the bomber presumably had only months to live. However, doctors are now saying that the bomber may live another 10 years or even longer.

Sadly, this means that a mass-murdering terrorist got away with his crime.
