Congratulations to Antonio Barton on a splendid display from the point today. Can we ever use that? On November 22, 2011 Memphis State beat Tennessee in the Chaminade Classic in Hawaii 99-97 in 2 OT. Mr. Barton scored 21 points on 8 for 11 from the field, 4 for 5 from 3 point, and 1-1 FT. The Vols played them twice that season. On January 4, 2011 I attended the second game in Knoxville with my best friend to celebrate my retirement. (Actually this game was in 2012, they had a home and home. Tennessee won the game I attended 104-84. Barton had 8 in that game. Geez, 65 is no fun! :)) Thanks to VolGee4 for catching this!) He committed suicide the following month. I was totally clueless. Memphis State beat Tennessee on that night 69-51. Antonio scored 19 points. He was 5 for 7 from the field, 4 of 5 from 3 points, and 5 for 5 from the free throw stripe. Today you saw just how good he is!

That's ironic; the guy sitting next to me at the game today was referring to them as Memphis State.

used to love going to the old Coliseum to watch Memphis state. It was rowdy. I remember when the pep band behind the goal would get really pissed along with the crowd, the drummer would pound out a beat and at the end of it, half the crowd would do the fu or up yours sign or whatever it means when you basically throw an uppercut and put your other hand on your lower bicep.
And they would do it several times in a row directed at the refs. Would be no way that would be allowed now.

When Antonio Barton joined three All SEC players and Josh Richardson in the starting lineup my thoughts were "Damn, this team is going to win the SEC this year". Remember, Mayman was All SEC in the 2010-11 season, pre-season first team All SEC for the 2011-2012 season while Stokes was second team before his injury. I think the injury combined with the infection that followed has limited his jumping ability yet he is good enough to remain a starter. And of course McRae was the other returning All SEC player. Josh has played lights out this year hitting over 40% from beyond the arc. Add to that the heralded newcomers and Kentucky was an afterthought which turned out to be true. It's not the players. The lack of success this year points in only one direction!

So sorry to hear about your friend. But the regular season game against Memphis in CCM's first year was at Memphis. I was at that one. Golden struggled all night.

We played them last year in Knoxville and got behind big. Our late comeback came up short.

Not trying to be smart; just trying to clear up the dates and locations.

Must have been 2012. Pearl's last year was in the spring of 2011 and beat Memphis in December. The game on January 4, 2012 was at Memphis and under Martin. I live in Memphis and was there.

This team would be so much better with Trae Golden.

Golden led to team to 2 NITs, and is leading Georgia Tech to the CBI. I don't think there's any way this team would be "so much better" with golden leading it.

Lets just say this. We would definitely be dancing if we beat A&M twice. Barton missed a 3 with about 1:30 left in the first game, and it would have put us up two or more possessions, and we likely win. If Martin doesn't call a TO in the second game, then Barton's 3 wins it. We would be talking differently if those 2 had counted.

No doubt at all

They had a home and home. The game I attended was January 5, 2011. Tennessee won 104-84. Got them confused in my old age! :) Antonio Barton only had 8 points in that game.

No problem. I just knew I attended the one that Martin coached in Memphis. I agree that the years run together. I just don't see many games, and the ones that I do stick out.

Yes. That was Pearl's last year. We beat them like a drum.

that game explains why it wasn't too much to ask for @ 8-10 pts, 4 assts and a couple of rebounds a game from Barton.
If he has that ability, it's his and CM's fault for not being able to half the game he played yesterday and a game to game basis. There always just seems to be a disconnect between CM and every pg he plays. Trae gets benched. Barton gets benched. DT gets benched. Now he runs a couple of pick and rolls for a pg and what do you know, confidence and rhythm builds and equals more made shots, and better defense due to energy and confidence.
It's all a cycle and starts at the top. We've just wanted to get the ball to Mcrae, maymon or stokes asap and don't ask the pg's to do anything, then when they don't show up in the stat sheet, we complain they don't do anything. It's up to CM. Do you tell your pg to play ball and get up and down the court, feeding the post early, kicking it to Mcrae or calling for an immediate pick and roll if they aren't open?
Or do you gameplan or tell them to walk it across, stand in one place 45 feet away and try to make a difficult pass before running the opposite direction and standing still for 15 seconds.

Yes, congrats to the young man. I wish he was coming back another year. He's a good player, but for no other reason, he's a great plan B.
