Breaking down the Big 12.

South:

By far the South is the stronger of the two sides of this conference and this year that tradition will continue. Considering that the South will produce three top ten teams preseason, its needless to say there will be a helluva battle for the top spot. I’ll go one step further on bold predictions though: All 6 teams in the South go bowling. Mark it down.

Texas 1:

Do you realize how much it pains me to type that? I’m not whining, I just want to point it out. Anyhow, Mack has got em pumped up to the top again and there is a ton of expectations from the hippies in Austin proper. The added pressure of a Heisman race will only help motivate Colt to out perform Bradford at Ou. The schedule they put together is insanely easy for OOC games, but playing the Raiders in week 3 will only create more momentum going into the rest of the season. Normally this game would be held much later, but was moved to adjust to the TV stations wishes. Regardless, the Horns should be at the top of the South by seasons end. There, I typed it. I’m gonna go wash my hands now.

Okie Lite 2:

No guts no glory, right? I could have picked Ou second, but then I’d be just like the rest of the drones that takes the easy road out. The Pokes are on the rise and have moved passed being that other school in the dust bowl state. In short, Okie Lite has a coach, a Qb, and a wide receiver that will put them past that community college in Lubbock as well as, wait for it, arch in state rival Ou this year. That’s right, I said that the 41-year-old man would beat the guy who wears LPGA visors in Norman. It may not be pretty, but it’s their time and don’t be surprised to see Dez in the room with McCoy at a certain awards ceremony at the end of the year. Now for the fine print at the bottom: (This message will self destruct if Georgia wins on opening weekend)

Oklahoma 3:

They return 16 starters including Sam I am and Stoops basically focused on the defense in the off-season. I can imagine the folks in Norman are bent after being handed it in recent Bowl games, but lets face it, Florida was, is better than them. It’s not an SEC thing; it’s a talent thing. Do I think t.u. Deserved a shot last year? Nope. Do I think the Red River Shootout will decide the Big 12 this year? Nope. Miami is the only OOC game that poses any threat, but it happens after 3 tune up games. The only reason why I mention it is because it is in Florida. Still, the Sooners should win that one, but look for several close games throughout the seasons. They wont be down for long, but I gotta go with my gut and say, this year, Ou finds themselves in a strange place. Not in the top 2 in the Big 12.

Tche 4:

That’s not an error on the spelling; it’s a sign of lack of respect on my part. Now that I got that outta my system I’ll say something positive about the community college in Lubbock. Their coach is a riot and listening to his interviews can make your day. He’s weird, he’s funny, he’s off the wall, but in the end, he’s a one-track mind kinda guy. “How many touchdowns can I score in one quarter?” Its been said the Raiders don’t recruit, they reload. This year they’ll have to after losing the undrafted (hahaha) Harrell and the guy that “Dreamed it in my head.” Taylor Potts will be the next gun slinger under center and is all kinds of hyped up by the folks in Lubbock. Don’t look for any more defense than in recent years though, and unless they can get passed U of H on Sept 26th, I don’t see more than 7 wins this season. Yea, I know. I said Houston could beat tche.

Baylor 5:

Have you heard of Robert Griffin yet? I have and so has the rest of the Big12. Pretty soon the nation will know who he is too which is scary considering that Baylor has improved over the past 2 years on both sides of the ball. They’ll still lose to who the normally do, but look for Art Briles to get his boys hyped up for the big games and possibly pull out some of these close ones. Unfortunately, the Baptist will be disappointed on opening weekend when they watch their Green and Gold men lose to Wake Forest. After that, they’ll have 3 warm-ups until they travel to Norman for their annual whipping. The big games of the year will be when they get Tche in Arlington and yes, I’ll say it, when they return to Kyle Field on November 21st. Still, Baylor goes 6-6 and looks ahead to Griffin’s third year.

TAMU 6:

Allrighty, here we go. My Aggies ought to be heading into Arlington to face old SWC rival Arkansas 3-0. They “ought” to be. With that said, we all know what happened last year and we all saw the season unravel throughout Big12 play afterwards. The good news is, its year 2 for Sherman. The bad news is, its year 2 for Sherman. Bill Byrnes knows it, Sherman knows it, and Aggie fans know it. Another 4-8 season will get you a U Haul rental free of charge and considering the possibilities of other, more attractive coaches on the market, this may be Mike’s last year regardless. Nothing short of beating Ou in Norman and Texas at home, will save him in my book, but who knows. Look for the tche game to be a bit closer than last year as this rivalry has surpassed the Lone Star showdown in many people’s mind. Leach only threw gas on the flames with his comments about the Dallas Cowboys taking McGee in round 4. Then again, he didn’t get his guy drafted so I guess he has a right to be a little bitter.

The Cliff notes:

1 Texas (12-0)
2 Oklahoma State (11-1)
3 Oklahoma (10-2)
4 tceh (7-5)
5 Baylor (6-6)
6 TAMU (6-6)

The Skinny:

Quite possibly the strongest group of teams this conference has ever seen will take the field next year, regardless of the big losses many teams had in the off-season. Look for old school, smash mouth football, mixed in with some huge plays from these offensive sets. Still, when the dust settles, t.u. will rise above them all and go on to the NCG. We will see several close games, and some surprises along the way so buckle up and ice down the Shiner Bock!

I do not follow the Big 12 as close as you do but I honestly believe that Tech will be behind Baylor in the standings at the end of the year.

I can't imagine Oklahoma not doing better than 3rd, but I don't follow that conference as closely either.

I agree that Texas Tech is in trouble.

I put tche ahead of Baylor based on their home field advantage among other reasons.

exactly you need a stop gap guy to at least get recruiting rolling again and get back to bowl games. then you go after the big guns. do you really like gundy that much btw? i've never been overly impressed. particurally after a pretty mediocre oregon team rolled them in the holiday bowl last year.

Sherman was brought in to recruit and I'll give him a little credit there. We are so desperate on both lines that its almost impossible for him to dig through it all with in 3 years(my orginal prediction for his term). While some are delusional, Im not. I know where we are and I know who we play against. I know how hard it would be for a guy like Gundy to come here sans any ties to aTm. Do I like him? Hell yeah I like em! Wish we had em, but your thought process is the same as mine. We need someone to build the foundation in recruiting, ie a guy like "Ears", or Sherman to actually make the waves he was supposed to make. Then we can turn it over to a younger guy.

I've started the rallying cry a year ago with this hire, and I continue it today. Everyone here wants to win, but they are so damn caught up in getting someone who is in the "family".

His biggest win was over last year's Missouri team. They turned out to be pretty mediocre.

Beat t.u. and screw over Stephen McGee.

I remember watching that game in 06. Seems like they gave Texas a good game the year they won it all, too. What happened with McGee?

Stephen never had any type of consistency as far as offensive schemes during his time at aTm. Fran loved that criminal Reggie McNeal, but when he got hurt, he had to play Steven. Then the following season, when Reggie was a patched up, he gave the job back to Reggie. Then Stephen got reinjured and Fran quit. Now Sherman showed up and went with Jerrod Johnson over the "people's qb". In short, Stephen was everything Aggie and deserved a better shake than he got. Be it injuries, or sorry coaches, his tenure at aTm should have never turned out the way it did. He is, was, and always will be remembered as one of our favorites because of his passion, his willingness to take a pounding regardless of the consequence, and be a class act and a team player. He took a shot against t.u. one year when he was filling in for Reggie. It was a clear cut helmet on helmet, should have knocked him out kinda shot. Eric Berry like to give you a reference. He bounced up immediately and went to the face mask of the guy and told him to bring it again. He won over a lot of Ags with that. I cant say enough about him and wish him all the best.

The Qb saga continues to this day. Ryan Tannehill is out at wide receiver and imo, he would be under center if I had a say so.

A ton of tough teams. Oklahoma St I dont know about. We will see. Over Oklahoma? Texas may be the best team on paper outside of UF but their schedule is rough.

Sadly, the B12S winner could be the best team in the nation, yet get done in by their schedule. This is how tOSU gets BCS championship games. B10 is so weak.

Media days taking place now. Pretty boring coach talk on day 1 from Pelini, Gundy, Sherman, and Rhoads. Today the headliner will be the LPGA Visor Stoops.

Key points:

Pelini talked about Qb issues.
Gundy made no mention of being a "man", but commented on their schedule being brutal.
Sherman addressed depth issues on both lines and linebackers. Qb's will have to battle for the spot, but it looks like Johnson will get it again.
and Rhoads was just happy to be there.

Day 2 of Media Day highlights:

Pinkel recognizes the losses at the program but is optimistic. Bla bla coach talk.
Briles knows he has a stud Qb, and actually indicates that the aTm game will have Bowl game implications. (He still sounds like a presumptious jerk, ie typical baylor)
Magino admits the rise of Nebraska but still views his program as a top contender in the north.
Stoops spoke on the character of his retuning players, his continued love affair with Sam and had no comment when asked about the *.

All in all, no locker room motivational material from anyone except maybe Briles who is as arrogant as ever.

Have Leach, Sherman made up? You decide

July 29, 2009 3:46 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Tim Griffin

IRVING, Texas -- Texas Tech coach Mike Leach has taken a few verbal potshots at Texas A&M over the years, most recently with his pointed criticism of the Aggies' coaching staff after the Dallas Cowboys drafted A&M quarterback Stephen McGee in the fourth round of the NFL draft.

Leach, if you remember, professed his excitement after McGee was drafted into the NFL.

"I'm happy for Stephen McGee," Leach said after the draft. "The Dallas Cowboys like him more than his coaches at A&M did."

A&M coach Mike Sherman didn't want to rehash the incident when he appeared on Monday, telling reporters only that he and Leach had "a good conversation" when they met during the conference's coaches meetings in Phoenix in May.

Leach had little more to say during his appearance at the Big 12 media day.

"I have the utmost respect for Mike Sherman and Texas A&M," Leach said Wednesday. "Some statements needed to be made, but I don't have any problems. I never had a problem."

And Leach also said he had no regrets about his comments.

Whether there was an apology or just conversation about Leach's comments between the two South Division coaches, I guess we'll never know.

But it only adds to one of the nation's most intriguing rivalries when the two bitter foes meet Oct. 24 in Lubbock.
