UPDATE- It was the OLDER incident....
A video obtained by the News Sentinel clearly shows Tennessee junior defensive tackle Tony McDaniel punching UT student Edward Goodrich during a pickup basketball game Jan. 12 at the UT recreation center.
Goodrich was punched after a group of basketball players collided underneath the basket.
McDaniel immediately walked away after throwing the punch. Goodrich was motionless for almost a minute before any other participants tended to him.
Goodrich, who said he was knocked unconscious, said when he watched the tape that it appeared other UT football players stood around him and laughed at him. It is unclear from the tape if that is the case. McDaniels attorney Don Bosch strongly denied that claim.
Two participants in the game stood over Goodrich and looked at him, one dribbling a basketball, but their intentions are unclear. Although Goodrich said other UT athletes were present, none of the participants in the game are identifiable.
McDaniel made a deal with prosecutors and was ultimately convicted with a misdemeanor this week. McDaniel was sentenced to 11 months and 29 days in jail but placed on immediate probation and is not expected to serve any jail time.
McDaniel was retroactively suspended for the summer semester by UT meaning any credits he accumulated will be voided.
UT coach Phillip Fulmer suspended McDaniel for the first two games and said the second-team defensive tackle will also be forced to complete community service, attend anger management counseling and abide by a curfew for the fall semester.
Doctors inserted a metal plate to repair Goodrichs cheekbone, one of four bones fractured on the right side of his face. Two eye socket bones and a sinus cavity were also broken.
Goodrich said that doctors told him that if the punch had landed four inches higher, closer to his temple, he could have suffered brain damage, been blinded, or even killed.
The video was made available to the News Sentinel by the Tennessee Public Records Law.
