The University of Tennessee announced this morning that they will retire the jersey numbers of three Vol standouts in a 3pm press conference later today.

Peyton Manning's 16 is the only "Jersey" to be retired even though the NUMBER is still used today.

It's unclear which they are retiring, but looking at the numbers that are left unassinged, and who wore them, I'll bet that they are retiring Jerseys, and that Reggie White will be one of them.

Numbers 32, 49, 61, and 62 are already retired. They belonged to 4 fromer Vols that died in WW2.

32- Bill Nowling
49- Rudy Klarer
61- Willis Tucker
62- Clyde Fuson

I like this very much, I think its well past time for such honors for our greatest Vols! And, the way available scholarships keep getting reduced by the NCAA, I don't think running out of numbers will be a problem!
Also, anyone else notice they'll be retiring peyton's number during a game against the ole ball coach? The one coach he never beat, now theres irony!

Most likely it's an off week for him and the only time he could attend.

Hopefully we'll put one one the Visor for him that day.

This is very bad and shows no respect for UT traditions by the AD

I really haven't made up my mind about this.

I'd like for you to expand on your feelings as to why you oppose this, if you don't object.

Also; how do you feel about naming streets?

I'm in the same boat with the mixed feelings. I think it's great to honor great athletic achievement, but I have a little difficulty putting Peyton Manning's jersey next to those of men who gave their life for our country.

Streets are fine, even a plaza outside Neyland stadium is fine but when it comes to numbers I feel this way.

The precident was set years ago when the first 4 were retired and it shouldn't be changed now.

Where will it stop? What about players like Gene McEver who Neyland said was the best player he ever had or Bobby Dodd and all he did, Herman Hickman, Bob Suffridge, Bob Johnson, Al Wilson, John Majors, George Caffego, Hank Lauricella, Andy kozar, Bert Rechichar,Beattie FeathersBowden WyattSteve DeLong, Frank Emanuel, John Michels, Ed Molinski, Jack Reynolds, Steve Kiner or Ed Cifers and others who could lay claim to being good enough to have their jersey's retired.

What about todays recruits who wear those numbers and will not come to UT because they are retired and will not be able to wear them, this will affect recruiting in a negative way.

I tend to agree with those sentiments. It does open a Pandora's Box of potential problems and hurt feelings.

There are other ways to honor former players that doesn't slight others.

I'm still not coming out against the move but I do question the wisdom.

vol67 I certainly respect your position on this. I am sure there are a great many others who share your thoughts. And GAvol, your comments regarding the sanctity of four brave Volunteers' efforts give me pause as well.
I believe it is good and proper to honor those few, incredibly distinguished Vols who have represented themselves and their alma mater so well. Both today, and in the past. Retiring numbers is a widely accepted method of recognizing achievement among tradition rich teams.
As to where it stops, I don't think a pandora's box is being opened here. And I expect some of the truly great names from years past will be welcomed in years to come without the floodgates opening.
So, I respect your love for the tradition as it stands. I'm willing to make room for the idea that retired numbers can be a good... and responsibly handled.. tradition for the future.

I can see we're at different ends of the spectrum on this...

Taking 3 more numbers out of circulation is a very bad idea. The Pros can do it cause they only deal with 55 players not 100 as colleges do.

Retiring numbers is a widely accepted method of recognizing achievement among tradition rich teams in the Pros yes in college no because of the limitng of numbers and the adverse effect of recruiting

I honestly had never considered an adverse effect on recruiting until you mentioned it. I'll have to admit that you could be right about that.

He's also got a great point about the number of players. With 85 on scholarship plus walkons plus nobody wanting to wear #00, you can't retire very many numbers.

Is there a rule about 3 digit numbers?

The NCAA rules designate the numbers that can be used

I am just not for this! :nono: I did feel it would be appropriate to remove the #92 from the roster for maybe just this season?

Harrell could have selected another number as a honor to Reggie and picked back up in the #92 for his Sr season.

Something sounds funny from the AD's office.

They shouldn't retire anymore numbers. Peyton isn't about that nor was Rev. Reggie White. To honor Rev. White make a scholarship in his honor. Anyway, WWII vets should be the only ones retired! :hi:

That's the main problem I have with this whole idea. There are so many great players in the history of our program who deserve to have their numbers retired just as much as the three who are being honored. I'm all for honoring these guys, but there are many ways to do it without retiring their numbers. :twocents:

A lot of people do deserve it....i definately agree with the ones that have died in the war.....i have mixed feelings about it because they all deserve it,but other ppl would like to wear the numbers im sure....maybe they should partially retire them....hang the jerseys and names somewhere but still let people wear them...

To those who oppose the retiring jerseys, should it be for every college team or is it UT specific that they shouldn't retire jerseys?

I could care less what other teams do as far as their Numbers. I'm concerned with UT and the tradition that was already in place for retiring numbers

Well, I'm pretty shocked.

I agree with retiring JERSEYS, but not numbers. Like several have said here, there are just too many great players that deserve it.

Why didn't they just retire jersey's and create a new hall inside the "new and improved" Neyland Stadium to display them?

I just don't see how they can keep honoring the deserving.

It doesnt bother me that they are retiring the numbers alongside the WW2 guys, I don't believe the arguement that it lessens their honor, but that's just me and I could see how others could see it as disrespectful.

Personally I think it is disrespectful.

Hamilton is just like an old dog marking his territory but peeing on everything.

Has he done ANYTHING you like?

I dont mean that as an attack on you, I just know you don't like him, and wonder if you support anything he does.

Also, who would you rather have?
