NIL deals are 1099-NEC deals where the player isn't an employee. They aren't employment contracts but agreements to appear, sign, do a photo opp, etc. The collective agrees to provide X number of events at $$ per event. If the player doesn't show, they don't have to be paid. I believe that's how it works. There’s a penalty for breaking your contract. He paid $3 million . Or someone paid $3 million to get out of his contract. The players don’t pay a dime when they break their contract. Not to my knowledge at least.
Maybe that’s how we slow these things down. We make the player or whichever school acquired his services pay a buyout for the amount of their contract they signed w/ the schools collective.
If the collective starts signing you'll get paid this much over the year, W-2 employment contracts, I think the can of worms of pro status crack open. Especially as the schools try to move NIL money and deals inside the school, if you're paying athletes with employment contracts, you're in the pro sports business.
People here want it both ways: they aren't professional athletes but the school should be able to treat them like they are pro athletes.
All of this mess is solved if the high revenue schools will rip the bandaid off and go pro OR the US Congress provides...... aw, c'mon, those folks are busy making huge changes and I, for one, don't want them distracted while they reform govt.
