Brian "Killer" Kelly talking to his (already anointed) ELITE players

I love having a normal person as a HC. Not a shower-discipline mama's boy, not a shoe-lift, girdle wearing carnival barker, not a semi-literate gump. Just an honest guy who loves football and is a heckuva coach.
Heupel has been there done that, as a player. That's the difference. Players gravitate toward that and respect it.

Still better than Beamer. Kelly has had success at a high level and built three different programs at this point. He is a better fit in Baton Rouge than I expected.
His left field demeanor makes the Cajuns think he is a kindred spirit.

Sorry, but BK did not "build" ND any more than he is building LSU.

His ND tenure will be forgotten about by most within a decade or two for all but the most ardent ND fans. He won there, but didn't win big. In many ways, he is like Lincoln Riley at OU.

In both cases he has taken over for a coach who got fired and has enjoyed decent results. Here's the rub though-both are "blue bloods" by my definition and this inherently have an advantage over newer up and coming schools.

Now, had BK gone to say a Wazzu or Mizzu and taken them to great heights in his career, then perhaps I would be more appreciative of him as a coach.

Taking a team that has had 2-3 bad years but has enjoyed very recent success is always going to be better than starting from scratch.

Now, he comes outta all this with a NC or two I might change my mind. Just think his LSU tenure is going to be a repeat of his career at ND-good but not great. Eventually, LSU will accept that he is not a guy that is going to get you "over the hump" if you will and BK will be gone in 6-8 years. Perhaps by his own choosing

You are correct. Brian Kelly is not a NC coach.
He built Central Mich and Cincy, which is pretty impressive. 33-7 in 3 seasons at Cincy is friggin impressive!
2008 and 2009 ND was a .500 team playing mediocre teams. They won 65 games from 2000-2009.
Kelly took a blue blood program in its Dooley phase, and made it a consistent winner (one bad 4-8 record in 2016). I am looking at defensive stats under Weis and I stand behind what I posted about rebuilding ND. They had a very potent offense and could not win under Weis, even against pretty underwhelming schedules.

You and I have different concepts of a rebuild. No biggie.
Kelly is a top 15 coach in the game today. Not being in the B1G or SEC put a ceiling on how great that is. He built a top tier Midwest football team.
He is a first degree goober and is either an embarrassment, or a comedy genius. If he is a genius it is the Jerry Lewis type.

He got ND to the playoffs twice, pretty good coaching.
I think he will be a thorn in Saban's side next season.

There are many coaches out there better than Coach's Son Beamer. Heck, there are many coaches out there better than his dad, for that matter. VT was and is an ESPN creation, designed to get Michael Vick on screen as much as possible.

Let's face it, Shane comes from a coaching tree built at a school that uses 'Enter the Sandman' as its "Tradition" laden entry. Pitiful.

Naah. Just residual irritation from having VT endlessly hyped by ESPN in the early and mid 2000s. Akin to the Cowboy Broadcasting System (CBS) phenomenon of the 1970s.

VT did have 2 Top 10 finishes in 95 & 96.
They won 53 games between 93 & 98. Vick was Fr in 99.
Considering where Beamer found them, pretty good build.
Dad Beamer could coach.
They've only finished 1 season ranked in the last 10 years.

Sadly they also beat our azzes physically in a bowl game under Beamer when we had a pretty good team and on paper should have won. It was pretty painful should anyone want to refresh their memory...

Butch. Jones. Clone.

Paid to ride the bench at some nothing school. Dad was a freaking politician and so would he have been if he didn’t network his way into coaching. Somehow leveraged small job after job to get offered notre dame job. Only reason he won any games there is because it’s notre dame, they play hardly anybody and their name recognition still brings in top 10 classes. Now he gets the same opportunity in the sec with lsu.

What a farce. Snake oil car salesman. Hope he crashes and burns. Sorry lsu will have to (hopefully) experience it.

You mean when lane Kiffin had a foot out the door. That should hardly count for anything.

None of that explains the non-stop hype and attempt to create a football 'tradition' from whole cloth ESPN engaged in during the Vick years.

'Beemer-Ball' lmao. You mean emphasizing defense and special teams? You know, like the Maxims state, and countless other coaches have done?

VT is a flash in the pan joke, and ESPN tried to create a football 'dynasty'. They made it to one BCS game, where FSU blew them away, absent a brief stretch in the 3rd Quarter when FSU kinda went to sleep.

I think a whole lot of the VT hype was ESPN and ABC were required to show their games. Few good choices in the ACC and Big East.
