I was talking to a top assistant to Jeff Byrd, General Manager of BMS, this evening, and it looks like the sell-out streak is about to end. The race day walk-up crowd managed to barely eak out an "official" sell-out in 2009. We are to ignore the seats that had no butts in them.

As of today, a little over 100,000 tickets have been sold, far short of the 160,000 capacity. Between 20 & 25 luxury suites are unsold. These are the most expensive (read most profitable) per seat tickets in the house, so a considerable reduction in revenue is expected.

The big factor in determining the walk-up race day ticket sales is the weather, a crap shoot this time of year in upper East Tennessee. Two years ago we had snow.

A side bar to this story is that Jeff Byrd is continuing to recover, and is being treated after a brain tumor was removed. Please join me in adding Jeff to your prayers. He is one of the good guys.

I went to the Spring Nationwide and Cup races free last year. Somebody unloaded the Nationwide tickets on me early and my wife and I really enjoyed that race. Not quite as crowded - the Legends deal - it was nice.

Then a friend called Sunday morning about 10:00 AM and said they had two free tickets to the Cup race. After my brother-in-law and I hightailed it up there we got there just after the race started. After paying the $25 to park and hiking to the track and up to the top of the stands we were in. About 300 laps into the race he said this isn't worth it - at all. And maybe I'm just getting a little older now and I agreed 100%. Just so much hassle getting in and out and the crowded stands and everything it just wasn't fun.

I would go back to the Nationwide race this year if I got free tickets but I swear if someone offered me Cup tickets again free this year I will decline.

I know a bunch of people trying to unload tickets right now but they are all at least at face value right now. Doozer if you wait around until the day before or day of and are prepared to go down there and stand outside with the scalpers you could probably get two tickets for at least half of face if not a better deal. They were trying to give them away as my brother-in-law and I went in last year. I know they were selling some for $15-$20 a piece right out side of the track about 10 laps in.

Based on last year, I will estimate you can buy tix for well under face a couple of hours before the race. As far as half, I am not so sure, not more than an hour before start. the guy I am talking to is still asking face, but he knows it is unlikely.

I have kept Jeff Byrd in my thoughts since I heard the news. Thanks for the update.

I'm going for free this year too!

IMO most of the fun of going to the race is the scanner chatter, meeting all your friends at your favorite drivers hauler after the race and hanging out in the campground after the race until the traffic clears out. It's an event and it's always fun! It's worth a hundred bucks to me!

He has sold them, but there are sellers all around, good place is around Earharts Campground. Still tickets at track.

Have a feeling today will be a complete gully washer from the looks of the weather. Tomorrow don't look much better. If they wind up having to race on Tuesday anyone that wants to go probably would be able to go for free just about. I hope they get to race but it sure doesn't look promising at all.

The ticket situation blows my mind. It wasn't more that 4 or 5 years ago that someone offered me $1000 for my pair of cup and busch tickets to the fall race. Spring tickets have always been easier than fall, but to see the place half full, even considering the weather, is shocking.

it was more than half full. i'd say closer to 75% full.

wish I had found this site before now, we have seasons tickets, and always sell our march tickets, sell the weekend packages for 100 bucks, keep that is mind for next year if anyone needs a ticket for next year

Kurt did get stuck behind a slower line than Jimmie on that last restart. That brings me to a question. Aside from the leader getting to chose which line they want to restart in do you think the higher positioned driver in each row should chose their line? If you're in 5th on the restart for example you would be on the inside line in the third row. Should that driver get to pick the outside row and force the 6th place guy to the bottom and let each row be determined by the higher positioned driver?

It would be easy to line them up that way as the driver would just run up behind the car they want to restart behind. It would come in to play when you know a guy stayed out in front of you and the other line would be faster for example.

Idk, just a thought I had.

I agree 615, but I could see people arguing over space and saying they were a spot ahead so they could choose their line.

I'm afraid it would take too long for each row to decide this as they would wait until the row ahead decided, then there almost certainly be a dispute over who was where. It would add another lap of caution minimum.

They were going to go for two tires only, but Kurt over ruled and asked for 4. Wonder if he could have stayed in front with two? Stewart ran well on just two.
