I hadn't seen much posted in here about this, but it is a fascinating story...

A secret tunnel in a NYC synagogue leads to a brawl between police and worshippers

The exact purpose and provenance of the tunnel that incited the altercation remained the subject of some debate.

The passageway is believed to have started in the basement of an empty apartment building behind the headquarters, snaking under a series of offices and lecture halls before eventually connecting to the synagogue, according to Motti Seligson, a spokesperson for Chabad.

He characterized its construction as a rogue act of vandalism committed by a group of misguided young men, condemning the “extremists who broke through the wall to the synagogue, vandalizing the sanctuary, in an effort to preserve their unauthorized access.”

I have yet to see a good explanation for it. What is odd is when the police are there and start removing items from the tunnel, there is a soiled mattress that is shown.

From what I understand this is a property ownership dispute. The group is divided over whose teachings to follow. So when one group got locked out they attempted to access the building by tunneling in. They compromised the structure of the building and are lucky it didn’t fall in.

It kinda reminds me of a time here in Chattanooga in the 70s when a Baptist church split over which side the piano should be on and 15 people were arrested.
