Bruce Feldman on Jones Hire

Some Quotes that really stick out. I'm a fan of the hire. Butch or Art Briles were my top 2 after getting shafted by Strong. I think we'll be fine. :crossfingers:

"It was surprising that Jones wasn't on Tennessee's "A" list of options at the start of the process. In six seasons as a college head coach, Jones has led his teams to four conference titles -- two in the MAC at Central Michigan and two in the Big East at UC."

"Tennessee fans might have wanted Strong, but Jones has a 2-1 record against him."

"the biggest hangup on Jones for Tennessee was that he didn't have any SEC coaching experience. The problem with that is neither did Urban Meyer before he got to Florida or Nick Saban before he got to LSU or Mark Richt before he got to Athens or James Franklin before he arrived at Vandy or Kevin Sumlin before A&M moved into the SEC"

"Years ago Pete Carroll was USC's fourth of fifth choice and that worked out quite well. Just last year, Jim Mora was UCLA's fourth or fifth choice and the Bruins are looking pretty good now, too. Jones certainly brings to Knoxville a better coaching resume than the last two football coaches the school hired"

Blah blah blah blah...we all know he is gonna suck. Can't get recruits with a 'Butch who?'

I haven't heard anyone say he is a bad coach. Just that it's a terribly underwhelming hire

this whole thing is about managing expectations --the fan base expected a bigger name and when the AD did nothing to dispel that it created what we see here!

There have been a few this morning, but he will have a lot to prove before he gets the undying support of this fanbase.

We haven't had a fan base since Fulmer. Just a bunch of whinny, crybabies, with a I want it now now now attitude. They wanted Fulmer gone, got their wish. Not satisfied. They cried when kiffen bolted. Not satisfied. They b'd and moaned and got dooley fired. Not satisfied. Now didn't get a football god for coach. Are condemning him before given chance. Not satisfied. Alot of you people should take responsibility for not getting the kind of coach you wanted. If I was in contintion for the job, first thing i'd do is check out the fan sites. After reading some of the post from alot of you,i'd run from this program as fast as I could.

I doubt that many of the negative fan kings ever darkened a classroom door at the University of Tennesee.

Of course the fan base has been whiney in recent years--we've SUXED!! I don't know of too many fan bases, especially in the SEC, who are OK with watching their team getting ass-whippings.

Meyer and Muschamp and EVERY florida coach are helped by being in what is the first or second best state in the nation for high school football. It's almost impossible not to recruit well at florida--and georgia, too. That's any advantage for those schools that we do not have. We have to take good players out of other states--and in the 90s we did that regularly. But we were super good then and georgia and bama and lsu weren't. That's all changed and it's become a lot more difficult for us to pull kids--and that has made it more difficult to win.

Jones is going to have to recruit enough good players to make us competitive and then coax out some SEC wins--somehow--so that we can build a little momentum. Dooley could not win a close game to save his job, could not build momentum. Jones has to find a way to win a few SEC games--as Sumlin did this year--and build some positive vibe, which we've been lacking.

if I am to understand your "logic" here...

only a student or graduate from UT can be a real fan, or perhaps the student/graduate is more of a fan?

ABSOLUTE HOGWASH

Get off campus on game day Friday and drive through town. I lived in Knoxville for 3 years after graduating from Carson-Newman. I have lived in several metro areas, and now live in Northern Virginia. I have never lived anywhere that shows fan support from the locals like Knoxville does for TN. Many, many of the fans have never attended anywhere, let alone UT. So get off your high horse. People wear the orange and support their vols. period.

And these fans, who fly flags from their car windows, wear orange, and cheer their team spend money, buy tickets, and keep the machine moving along.

In the south, where there is no pro sports team around, the culture IS the college team. Pat Summitt used to say it best when she'd get on them gals after a weak 1st half - when you go out there, you see that sea of orange, that is who you are playing for - you aren't playing for yourselves.

It's not Gruden; but it's not Dooley either. Butch Jones can coach. With recruiting help and a quality staff: He will win! It is not as bleak on the horizon as it was 2 weeks ago. Jones has shown he knows the X's and O's far better than Dooley. With less tallent he has won.
Will he win at Tennessee? I don't know. He's our coach and let's hope for the resurrection of the Vol Nation.

Butch Jones and all of Vol Nation:
Lets get 'em.:clapping:

I'm all for giving his a fair shot. The question is will he be able to recruit against other SEC powerhouses?

UT wasn't going to please almost everyone unless they hit a homerun and hired Gruden. Well folks, there aren't many Gruden's and Saban's out there pining for a job. Bama got lucky and was in the right place at the right time when Saban wanted out of the NFL. That could've been UT if they were looking for a coach back then. UT was in a much more stable environment.

For people not wanting Jones and fawning over Strong is comical. They both coached in the same league and Jones was 2-1 against Strong. Both have risks involved if you hired them. Strong was coveted because of his ties to the SEC. Give Jones a chance. He hasn't had to do a major rebuilding job, but the UT job is much better than when Dooley inherited it. He at least hasn't screwed up a good thing at Central Michigan and Cincy and has shown he can coach capable talent in those leagues.

If he can put together a good staff, retain a few coaches and recruit his ass off then I think he can succeed. I like his fiery approach and think UT fans that are on the fence will warm up to him. Plus, he beat Candy in the Liberty Bowl with a Qb on a bum leg and inferior talent. So, he can't be all that bad. :)
