1. What a showing from our Vols, I mentioned after the first round game that this matchup intrigued me in a lot of ways. Tennessee is a very physical team and experienced where as Duke tries to be physical but is young and not played a team close to our size and physicality all season long. We also seem to really get up for the games against the big name teams and that was once again the case. The Barnes “haters” and criticizers will hopefully recognize the job Barnes has done with this team and give credit where it due, the postseason lack of success was really the only thing they could point to and that is now gone, and hopefully even more wins will be added to his NCAAT record in the coming days as well.

2. As frustrating as Olivier Nkamhoua can be it’s games like Texas and then last night that answers why so many have question why Barnes continued time and time again to go to him and start him. He has that type of ceiling, obviously percentages won’t always be that high but he can get his shot anytime he wants with that high release and his athletic ability. It would be great to be able to get a couple more of those games from him in this tournament, it really opens things up for us to have a post scoring threat. He’s a legit threat from 3 and just needs to be confident, that’s a shot we will be able to get him multiple times a game and when we are struggling to get a look offensively having him get open looks from top of the key area is something we and he need to take advantage of.

3. Our defense which had struggled of late after being great most of the year has returned in great fashion these opening 2 games. We have held both Louisiana and Duke to season low point totals and really set the tone early defensively. A huge part of it has been avoiding foul trouble, which is also a credit to refs allowing us to play physical a bit, and then our guys too really being locked into the scouts. The matchups have also been pretty good for us as well, neither of those teams were Top 40 offenses so they are susceptible to being locked up, neither had a super quick scoring threat PG either that has caused some issues without Zeigler.

4. While Nkamhoua obviously was great, Vescovi continued his hot shooting as well, but offensively it was a cold game from Key, JJJ & Phillips. I mentioned it before that these guys can obviously have a hot game, and we have been able to advance without it happening, they definitely have the potential to go off and carry us to a victory at some point. JJJ & Key especially will hopefully find it from 3, both of them have been cold to start the NCAAT, if they can find their stroke that will continue to open things up for us.

5. We did a much better job limiting turnovers, along with that points off turnovers and then shooting our free throws us well. Only 9 turnovers all game, which led to just 7 points off those turnovers, much better than the previous game. As I said after that one our defense is so good in the half court that you really don’t want to give opponents turnovers and easy baskets, making them have to work for any points in the half court is very taxing against our defense. Shot 77% from the line going 10/13, that’s pretty solid, Mashack missed a couple late but hitting the front end of those 2 late was huge even though he missed the 2nd of those it was 2 big points.

6. Looking ahead, obviously an opportunity is there, likely will be FAU, but obviously a chance FDU pulls another upset. I mentioned the matchups to this point and not facing small quick guards or very good offenses, well FAU definitely possesses both. They will pretty much exclusively 4 very small guards all 6’-6’4”, and then will rotate 2 post guys, a 7’1” 240lbs Russian (Plav twin?) and then a 6’8” 239lb as well. They shoot and make a bunch of 3’s and they are 1 of the better defensive rebounding teams in the country which isn’t great for us considering we typically get a lot of offensive rebounds which helps give us an edge. Will be watching their game closesly tonight but on paper they definitely have some similarities to Missouri who we obviously struggled with twice this year defensively. I also worry a bit because it’s obviously not a big name touted team and lots of times we’ve struggled with those types where as we’ve gotten up for the biggest named teams for the most part. Not trying to be doom or gloom and say we can’t win, more so just trying to slow down any looking ahead and remember that any team can win and that we’ve struggled with similar type teams, it will take a great effort once again but these guys can absolutely do it.

FDU can make history today. No 16 seed has ever won in the second round. The UMBC Retrievers fell to Kansas State after knocking off #1 Virginia in 2018.

Good post. I agree with the prospect of facing FAU vs a big name in the sport. We've had some disappointing outcomes when faced with a Cinderella type....not that a 9 seed is a Cinderella. 2 games from a historic season. I've been down on ON and his disappearing act. Hoping this game wets his taste for being a focal point in our offense. Would be huge for our chances of advancing.

Good write-up. Taking care of the ball was critical and we imposed our will upon the young Dookies. A good friend of mine who attended Duke texted me after the game and simply said “That was impressive, a man’s game”. Perfect summary. As you note above, we can even play better if others contribute on offensive end. Nkamhoua was insane in the 2nd half and didn’t shy away from the moment. Others need to follow him and Vescovi.

I’ll worry when we know who are next match-up is. For now it has been a great weekend.

Give me revenge game against Mich state elite eight 2010

Kansas state looked athletic. Their guard is worrisome.
Indeed. He would be a nightmare for us. Then again seeing ZZ in practice might make it a little less of a shock. Another team that looks to be for real is UConn. They've impressed me greatly in both of their games. Definitely a threat to win it all.

That doesn’t sound like Missouri to me other than being good from behind the arc. Brown, Hodge, and Gholson had length and athleticism to break down our defense and were a menace generating steals. FAUs guards are small and they don’t force a lot of turnovers/steals.

Brown plays a lot of 5 for Missouri, they play almost exclusively 4 small and sometimes 5 small, that was my point that stylistically on offense they are similar. Spread you out and get themselves a lot of looks from 3.

Duke only played 6. Barnes & Co knew it and the die was cast. We've been literally 10 deep all season. That's a blessing and in a way a curse because the top 7-8 haven't clearly separated in skill. Nevertheless, we went straight out to make this a slugfest, which Duke didn't want. Eventually, the PG was in foul trouble and actually was bailed out by the refs w several minutes remaining and game in balance. One of the main reasons for the zone D late that Michael Jordan in an OK costume just devoured! Hard to believe, but our depth was key to defeating a blue blood.
Good win by the Vols and we've been gifted yet again with bracket favor. Let's take advantage of it this time and win 2 more in a row!

Great job as always, BTO.

Vol trivia... Nkamhoua has the 2nd highest 3-point percentage for any Vol attempting more than 5 shots this year (behind only Vescovi).

Not saying he is better than players like Key, because Nkamhoua only takes wide open 3s. Nonetheless, he is #2.

If they can avoid those 5 min. scoring droughts and not turn the ball over 20 times they should be in good shape. Olivier just made this team tougher to defend, he will be game planned for. They need a new guy to step up and go off each game, they are all capable of doing that, even Uros.

Odd that a month back there was a long discussion on when/if Barnes would trim the rotation to 6-8 guys as he has traditionally done. Instead Barnes looks at his group and determines they’re better with a deeper rotation. Sure doesn’t support the “Barnes is stubborn and stuck in his ways” narrative that many like to tout whenever we don’t play particularly well.

I’m playing with house money from here forward as our limping into the end of the season with all the injuries appeared to have derailed our momentum and lowered my tourney expectations. Got a great opportunity to win the next one if we continue with the active defense and our seniors score points. JJJ’s shot isn’t falling so maybe he can find his rhythm this week and show up big Thursday. Also, this is the size of players Phillips was successful with earlier in the season. Keep your focus guys and we’ve got a legit chance against all 15 other teams still standing IMO.

I told friends Friday night to put money on Tennessee because we had Duke right where we wanted ‘em…nobody was giving us a chance. Nobody. And that is often when Tennessee plays its best, when the whole world counts them out. I am talking about our experiences with both football and basketball going back some 50 years. Fans my age know what I mean. I’m old.

Conversely, we have a maddening tendency to choke whenever we are heavily favored to win. We overlook smaller opponents, play down to their level of competition, show up asleep, etc. We tend to lose—get upset—when we seem to agree with the nattering nabobs before the game that we will win easily.

This FAU game scares me. We all are acutely aware of the profound Jekyll-and-Hyde personality of this team.

Take the 7'1 guy out of the game and limit the turnovers again and guard the three point line with gusto.

FAU looked pretty good, but I believe if we bring the defense we had against Duke, and JJJ can get his shots to fall , SV hitting like he is, I believe we have no trouble with FAU. I mean they were beat by Ole Miss, and did a number on them, so I'm thinking we will be just fine in this next game. Go Big Orange

I’m guessing mashack will be put on opposing teams point guards from here on out. That is the #1 concern going forward. Allowing the other teams point guard to penetrate and create offense

They’re fairly immune to that strategy in the sense that he barely plays 20 minutes per game to start with. They do platoon substitutions.

Does anyone think their Russian is going to give our post guys trouble?
I think their posts will get a fair amount of production. They're going to spread the floor and get a lot of one on ones inside with no help defender. Goldin and Rosado combined to average something like 16 points per game.

Against who again? That cat from Louisiana Lafayette was legit. I didn’t see any of that type player for FAU

They got 12 points in a win against Florida and 22 in a loss against Ole Miss. Limiting their perimeter scoring will probably go a lot farther in securing a win.
