1. Another solid resume win, NCST is not a world beater by any means but they’re likely a fringe NCAAT team, and that was played on a neutral court at an absurdly late start time, you’ll take that Q1 win every single day of the week. A lot of aspects weren’t pretty, some guys didn’t have it, some were under the weather, but the guys found a way to get it done and some others stepped up, that’s a sign of a great team.

2. On a night where Dalton Knecht struggled to get anything going it was JJJ who impressed once again and is continuing his stellar play in his final year on Rocky Top. He’s been criticized a lot for not showing up when needed but he was needed last night and he showed up, that was great to see from him. He’s now up to 45% from 3 on the year which is an incredible number for him, he’s getting great looks and taking great shots and you can see the work he’s put in and the confidence both he and his team have in him, he’s also driving to the rim more than we’ve ever seen him do, amazing what a healthy slate can do for you.

3. I thought Zeigler took yet another step in a positive direction, as I said weeks ago you needed old Zakai back and you’d probably just have to deal with some of the rust, it’s felt little by little he’s getting there and last night was the best he’s looked. The shot looked good, he was a pest defensively, he had some great assists, if we wanna nit pick he missed a couple bunnies, but again, last night was the best he’s looked which is a great sign going forward imo.

4. Mashack played another great game, he’s the unsung hero lots of times for us but he’s just so damn good, especially when a team has a player who’s feeling it offensively he just ends it. With JJJ showing more offense it’s allowed Mashack to play alongside him and it not hinder the offensive efficiency, this has allowed Mashack to pull some minutes from Gainey and allowed Mashack some more minutes recently, and deservingly so. He’s finding his role very nicely, getting into the lane when it’s there and hitting that nice little half hook, and then doing what he always has done defensively.

5. I mentioned pregame that I thought Awaka on Burns would be interesting and it was, thought that was a game changer to an extent. Burns was getting going on Aidoo and catching the ball way too close to the basket and getting backed down to where DJ would get to his spot each time, insert Awaka and that ended. He made DJ work much harder which tired him out, forced him to catch it further out which made it easier to dig down on a dribble by a guard and it really frustrated him and pretty much took him out of the game. Tobe also brought great energy and his insane rebound rate, 12 rebounds in 18 minutes, Aidoo had 4 in 26…unfortunately that also comes with fouls and Tobe had 4 fouls in 18 minutes as well. That’s a tough one because you don’t want to hamper his style and effectiveness, but you’re also limited on his minutes because of his foul tendencies, he by far leads all rotational players in fouls/minute.

6. That should pretty much put a bow on the OOC slate, they’ve got 2 games left but likely 20+ point favorites in both, so should be 2 more wins to close it out. Would put Tennessee at 10-3 entering conference play, road win against Wisconsin, home win against Illinois, neutral site against NCST & Syracuse…3 losses being away from home against Top 15 teams, that’s a great start to a NCAAT resume. As I’ve mentioned as well the SEC slate opens up pretty soft so this is definitely a stretch we need to be stacking wins, continuing to figure things out as a team, and building confidence as well.

Good report!

I’m so encouraged with this squad because we still haven’t seen everyone playing to their proven abilities yet. How high is our ceiling if we get Vescovi and Zeigler back to full capacity to go along with the improved JJJ, Mashack, Aidoo, and Awaka. Get Knecht and Gainey playing cohesively with those 6 and maybe with some luck this will be a final four year.

Going to be a fun season for us!

Liked the writeup especially #5. Impressed with Awaka. Playing the way he does against a very strong
post player will most likely put several fouls on you, but well worth it when you have the roster UT has.

Very disappointed with the play of Knecht and Vescovi offensively, although V can make up for it in other ways.
Looks like DK has been scouted effectively last coupla games or he is being hampered by flu bug or something.

Encouraged that UT this year can maintain even when the A+ players are off their game. Mashack and Tobe
have been really impressive of late. Gainey performed better last night than game before. I'm sticking with my
preseason 26 wins, but the SEC is showing signs of much improvement than I had expected (KY)

Noticed we went double big (even with Estrella at one point) when JJJ got 3 fouls. Found that interesting.

I love Mashack. I’ve always been a huge advocate of him getting more minutes.

I think lots of people have overlooked how good Vescovi has been as a ball handler, driver and passer this year. He sets up lots of offense, even if he doesn’t get the assist. His pick and roll game with Aidoo has been really good and probably will keep getting better.

Man DJ Burns has to be one of the laziest good players I’ve watched. I can see why Barnes didn’t put up with it long, can also see why Barnes thought he could help replicate what Grant did.

He just bodies people, would have LOVED to have seen him try that against Uros.

Awaka definitely handled him well though and made the big man work.

Uros would have turned it into a wrasslen match and likely negated Burns. But, he’d of grabbed 2 boards and missed 3 free throws. Think I’ll take Awaka!

Yeah Santi is distributing a lot more and driving on offense. But 9 points on 6 shots is pretty effective. His defense and effort is unmatched. NC State was on a 11-1 run in second half and tied it up at one point, then Santi came back in and they never got closer than 3-4 points again.

Just a great team win. Some tried to discount it last night, but that’s not a bad NC State team. Entered the night #53 in KenPom. Still a solid resume win.

1) JJJ continues to have a fantastic season. We needed every point he gave us last night. His timely shot-making ability has improved exponentially. I hope he can stay healthy all season. He’s finally living up to his potential.

2) Mashack is just an elite glue guy. DJ Horne had 11 points in the first 5 minutes. Mashack then came in and Horne didn’t score the rest of the half and most of the 2nd half. Mashack just changes the defensive intensity of every lineup he is inserted in. He is so underappreciated by because what he does won’t show up in the box score. If he can ever find a semblance of an offensive game, he could be an NBA player. His shot has improved since he got here. Maybe he’ll eventually figure it out and put it all together. His instincts are great.

3) When Dalton Knecht has the worst night of his collegiate career, the veterans stepped up. Just shows the value of experience and chemistry. Our vets took over the final 6 minutes of that game and it was clear they had played a lot of minutes together. Definitely bodes well for conference play if you can find some consistency there.

If Tennessee makes the 6 or so bunnies we missed, that game is a very comfortable win. It’s frustrating to watch that happen every game, every year. If it doesn’t stop, it’s going to cost us in the NCAAT.

The defensive keys to the game were reflected in your 4th point and 5th point. NC State was driving the ball to the basket early in the second half and getting to the foul line. Insert Mashack and it just went away. Aidoo was getting pushed around by Burns until Awaka came in and started moving him off the block.

Good points about Awaka and others stepping up. I personally saw no problem with Vescovi's play, although it would have been nice if one or two of his 3's fell. He was definitely a net positive.
I think Knecht was just out of sorts. It looked like the easy things were difficult for him. That happens and he'll move past it.

We are definitely a more complete team this year and the “lows” during games don’t seem to last as long as previous years. Should serve us well in sec play. Kentucky looking like our primary competitor in pecking order.

I still think Alabama will be a factor. They are taking their lumps now but played well in two recent losses against Purdue and at Creighton last night. Led most of the way in both but couldn't finish.

Agree, and Vescovi does a LOT that doesn’t show up in the stat sheet.

Bama is still able to run up a lot of points even when shooting like crap from 3. Scored 82 @ Creighton and nearly pulled it off, while shooting 18% from 3. They are dangerous for sure, no defense, but can’t afford to shoot poorly against them.

Awesome report. I agree on everything.

I think our depth helped us win this one, and I think we have just enough depth down low to put us over the top in most circumstances. Hopefully, our young guys keep developing there.

Knecht just proved he is human last night. Everyone has an off day. Sure NC St. also had plan coming in to shut him down if they could as he is our leading scorer. That is going to get the attention of the other team. I to was glad to see other guys pick it up. Love watching the guy, but Knecht doesn't need to be the superstar every game.

Great write up. Right on as usual. When Mashack guards a player who has been knocking it down, that player suddenly disappears. With ZZ gaining his quickness back, when he is on the ball, Mashack, Vescovi, JJJ, and Awaka on the floor, the other team really, really struggles to score and just don’t get into any type of rhythm. One of the best defensive teams I’ve seen. Knecht needs to relax and let the game come to him. With Vescovi and Ziegler’s shot coming back, and the daggers James is throwing, Knecht will get his looks if he’ll just be patient.
