1. Pretty much what the doctor ordered…Ole Miss really started hot from 3 and our defense was a bit lacking to match early on, but the offense was really humming and kept pace. After the first 8 minutes or so the defense really locked down, a switch to zone (WHAT?) helped disrupt Ole Miss and from that point on Tennessee really had control of the game and continued to slowly extend their lead.

2. Don’t look now but Tennessee has really been shooting the ball much better from 3 of late, that’s been spearheaded by Vescovi who over his last 10 or so games has really been a big time threat from 3. Add in JJJ’s return from injury and his threat from 3, albeit sometimes inconsistent, and we are getting some more shots to go down. That’s huge for this team as they need it for spacing, allows the bigs some room to work and then also for guys like Mashack and Phillips to drive the lane.

3. Have to clean up the turnovers, I know without Zeigler that’s a tough ask and I’m being lenient a bit in that I’m not expecting perfection, but the telegraphed “pick 6” type passes that lead to a run out dunk or layup have to stop. Seems like we had 4-5 of those today which gifted Ole Miss 8-10 points, our defense is so good that you hate giving that up to teams and not making them go against your half court defense. This next game will be another test in that as Missouri loves to turn you over and try to score in transition, and not just 2’s, they’ll gladly pull from 3.

4. Check out this stat, when Tennessee is called for 20 or more fouls they are 2-7, less than 20 and they are now 21-2…and those 2 losses are the Vanderbilt & Missouri games in which both teams shot extremely well from 3 and needed buzzer beater 3’s to beat us, in other words that stat is even closer to being 23-0. It makes sense when you think about, less than 20 fouls suggest refs are letting our defense be a bit physical, that we don’t have foul trouble and thus that gives you defensive versatility playing different lineups, offensively too.

5. Related a bit to #4…Tonight I kept wondering if/when we’d see a small lineup and Rick waited until the 11 minute mark to put it out there, I would just about guarantee this is because they fear some early foul trouble to guards and that handcuffing them for the rest of the game. It will vary by team but Ole Miss doesn’t have a post game, where they had any success was typically caused by some quickness and spreading us out so going small was a great matchup for us against them, and when we did it really showed, Ole Miss scored just 7 points the final 11:07 against small ball lineup, that’s a 25 point pace for an entire game. And the fact Rick went with it for final 11 minutes tells me it was something they wanted to do, just felt like they had to wait.

6. Absolutely had to have that one, would really like to win tomorrow as well and then honestly I don’t care, get us to the NCAAT healthy and hopefully with some momentum and confidence. We didn’t get any help around us on the seed lines, we went into today projected as the final #3 seed, I don’t think that changes with a win, we likely eliminated a chance of a 5 seed and wins in front definitely removed a 2 seed, so almost certainly looking at a 3/4 right now. It’s hard to say because the conference tournaments never seem to matter much so who knows, I would feel better about a 3 with a win tomorrow but again it may or may not even matter either way, we’ll likely never know.

If Mashack could get his offense on track again TN could make a run. I’m not sure, but I think he had TN’s first two turnovers and they were unforced. Glad to see him knock down that three though.

Phillips nearly turns it over every time he drives into the paint. But he does other things very well. He had some timely rebounds and isn’t frightening when he’s at the free throw line.

Plav’s free throw production is some of the strangest **** I’ve ever seen by a TN player. It is getting worse. I don’t see how that is possible.

It’s exhausting to witness, and see so much complaining about, the offense. But that defense is simply amazing. When TN was up about 10 with under 4 minutes, Ole Miss was barely getting shots off before getting shot clock violations.

ALL of the seniors need to be playing well for this team to advance. It’s nice to have about four of them on the floor late to limit mistakes and dumb play - but Key and Olivier really need to step up their contributions. They did make some key defensive plays down the stretch however. Uros obviously can’t be on the court late in close games. He might not make another free throw this year. Even with 2 shots rather than one-and-one he can’t be counted on to ever deliver one make.

#4 illustrates a thought I've had all year in that we are actually built well for the tournament. Teams tend to beat us by relying on a ridiculous amount of tick tack fouls that lead to a large free throw advantage and get our bigs in foul trouble. This was especially the case once we were down two guys due to injury and had a shorter bench. Our strength is our size and inside presence. If our guys are allowed to play through the tackiness or at least the games are called evenly on a nuetral court, other teams will have a harder time finding a blueprint to beat us.

The deeper we go the more favorable ref’s whistles should be. In regional semis and beyond there is a much larger audience and nobody wants to watch free throw shooting contests. But those first two games can be dangerous as the calls can often be biased in favor of the underdog to get ratings pops.

Except for the unc Gonzaga NC game. The refs wouldn’t let Gonzaga have the best player on the floor….. that was a brutal 2nd half to watch.

A revenge win over Missouri tomorrow is what I would love to see. Couldn’t really care less about the bama game Saturday if we get there. Not sure if we can even improve our seeding with a win and a couple more days of rest could be beneficial going into next week.

I feel because a lot of pressure from SEC brass Sankey etal that the refs were instructed to let them play to a point. They dont want the last game starting at midnight. This will be good for the Vols the more the refs let them play your stat of the < than 20 fouls proves that. I know a lot of you will think that is a conspiracy theory but the SEC and ESPN are about making money and giving their advertisers the time slots with more viewers. It is what it has became. This will change in the NCAAs its just a different dynamic JMO.

Awaka kept gobbling up rebounds and Nkamhoua showed up today.
Solid team win - hopefully the hot shooting continues!

2 rebounds and 9 points in 27 minutes isn’t what we need from ON if we’re going to go far. Someone in addition to Vescovi and JJJ is going to have to become a reliable double digit scorer IMO and unfortunately it appears the hugely inconsistent ON is the most capable candidate. If he could score double digits, out rebound Vescovi, and eliminated his 2-3 head shaking blunders a game then we become a more formidable contender IMO.

I’m about ready to see Awaka play until he fouls out.

Isn’t it surprising they play the same handful of commercials over and over? The Gatorade one with the big lady standing on her head and the too sweet Dr Pepper ones seemed to play every break?

Yeah, I abhor those 2, just chalkboard scratching irritating too. That feminine disco era dude reminds me of Carrot Top in sequins.

We are an elite defensive team when we lock in but over the last month of the season we seem to want to take significant stretches of games off. Against Auburn it was the second half. In yesterday's game Ole Miss could get any shot they wanted for about the first 10 or 15 minutes of the game and then we woke up and cut them off. I think one of the keys to getting on a run in the NCAA Tournament is locking in for 40 minutes.

Regarding point #3:
Basketball is a game of visual cues. When you've played together for awhile, it starts to feel like intuition, "knowing" that a teammate is about to drive, pull up, pass to the wing, etc.

In losing ZZ, we've lost a season's worth of intuition. A simple pass to the wing, and the wing coming to meet the ball, both contain elements of timing that are the difference between a steal and a smoothly run play.

When a player on the wing correctly anticipates the pass coming to him, he will give the relevant defender the slightest feint, either with eyes or body language, to shift the defender's weight just a bit onto his heels. That is often the difference between a successful pass and a pick 6. And it's all about timing and anticipation.

How many times watching a game have you seen ZZ pass to the wing, and you felt like it was a dangerous pass, but the defender was unable to make a play on it. That intuition/anticipation is why it wasn't.

I doubt there's enough time left in the season to develop that level intuitive timing between the players we now play. So we'll just have to run our offense a little more slowly and deliberately, and as fans, expect a few interceptions, mishandled lobs into the bigs, and our offense running deeper into the shot clock against better teams.

1. You are so right ... focus at the start of the game was ..."not intense - but intentional." Got to save your "energy and focus" for a 4 day period.
2.Yep! But our 3pt shooting percentage tends to drop off over time .... it could be due to adjusting defense, but I'm claiming it is due to tiring legs as the game wears on. The last 11 minutes of the game we were 0-6 (JJJ 4 and SV 2). Without those 6 ... we were approaching 50% from 3.
3. Turnovers ... that is going to be an ongoing issue ... a) no true point guard, b) new guys on the floor handling and passing the ball more, c) and lack of chemistry at this time. I would have loved the double bye, but this gave us an extra game to work on personnel meshing in a live game. the more games we play ... I think the turnovers will go down (hopefully).
4&5 Fouls ... letting teams play is a double edged sword. We do not show off as well when we are being bullied by physical players (think Texas A&M, Kentucky and Missouri's Kobe Brown) ... Awaka, Phillips, Key ...specifically are more comfortable with 'skill' basketball.
6. Agreed and yet .... I believe this next one is just as important as a win over Ole Miss. It is a psyche thing. They need to believe they will win. Beating a team that previously beat you is a psychological lift.
Missouri needed to shoot 54% from 3 to beat us last time out. We will need to bring defense out to the 3 pt line. We have JJJ for this game and that should make a difference defensively.

Personally, I want this team to make a statement:
March through Ole Miss and Missouri
Take down Alabama
And then bring home a back to back title on Sunday.

Then I will be able to celebrate and complain bitterly that we deserved a 2 seed. :^)))))))))))
Go Vols
