1. What a showing from these Vols…South Carolina is arguably the worst team in the SEC, but as we’ve stated multiple times on this board going on the road in conference play is never a gimme, but nobody expected that whipping. Once again looking elite as we’ve come to expect on the defensive end but for a second game in a row absolutely elite on offense as well, best showing from a college team today imo.

2. Olivier Nkamhoua was tonight exactly what Barnes has been preaching to us and many have scratched their heads and say they don’t see it…obviously not going to be perfect from the field every night but 21 & 10 in just 23 minutes is pretty stout. He’s averaging 15ppg in our last 5 games which includes Arizona and 3 conference opponents, if he can be relied on for that offensive output night in and night out that really is a benefit, obviously. However he can be better rebounding, Barnes challenged it and he showed it tonight…10 rebounds in 23 minutes is impressive, probably won’t match that every night but need him to bring that focus, he’s too athletic to be getting 1-2 rebounds.

3. Building off that point, I made mention of how good our 5’s are, not necessarily a single one of them being the best, but our collection of posts being very good. The last 2 games Nkamhoua, Plavsic, Aidoo & Awaka have combined for 86pts & 41rbs on 36-45 shooting (80%), that is beyond good, that is high level production and is a huge component as to the increased efficiency the last 2 games.

4. I don’t think you can mention the last 2 games and ignore the JJJ factor, he hasn’t done anything extraordinary, but I don’t think it can be dismissed that his re-arrival has coincided with our 2 best offensive showings. He’s a veteran presence, that is also a great ball handler and passer, he allows us to play big or small and his outside shooting stretches defenses. Obviously not fair to expect that we will have the offensive production we’ve had the last 2 games every game, but also looking like the offense is much better than it was without him.

5. Shoutout Zakai Zeigler, he’s really playing some great ball the last 2 games from the PG spot, feels like he’s under control on the offensive end and really getting exactly what Barnes is wanting, last 2 games he has 18 assists to just 4 turnovers. Doesn’t have to do a bunch of scoring for us, continue to hit 3 ball and FT’s and that’s probably enough, but his breaking down the lane and finding guys and then his defense are really just continuing to improve every time out, really seems like an extension of Barnes at this point.

6. 2-3 games ago this looked like an elite defense with a pretty rough offense that was hovering around 50th in the country. Insert JJJ and some solid post play and 3 games later this offense is knocking on Top 30 door while the defense continues to set records for how they continue to play each and every night. Those 2 things together now have Tennessee firmly at #2 in KenPom and right on Houston’s heels for #1. To be honest if it wasn’t for Houston’s great last game Tennessee would be #1, their ADJEM is #1 territory it just happens to be that Houston is also playing really well. It’s not a big deal at all, just something fun to watch and keep track of, this is far and away the best Tennessee has ever been in KenPom’s history.

7. Tennessee now sits 13-2(3-0), they’ve got back to back home games awaiting them and absolutely zero reason they shouldn’t start out SEC play 4-0 which is what I said they ideally needed to do. Honestly they’ll be big favorites against Kentucky as well with a chance to be 5-0 but I don’t want to do the whole counting chicken things. Things will change as other teams play, but right now Barttorvik has Tennessee as 9 point favorites or better in every game the rest of the way except last game of the year at Auburn where we are currently 8pt favorites. Again things will change and that doesn’t mean we will run the table, but right now this Tennessee team is playing like arguably the best team in college basketball, enjoy it.

Fantastic performance today. I have nothing to add. I think the best thing about all of this is how we are quietly doing this with little to no fanfare. Sure, we fans know how elite this team is so far. But, most of the chatter online has been about Alabama and Brandon Miller, how bad Kentucky has been this year, Houston looking great, etc.

We’re just going to bury our heads and keep playing lights out and sneak up on people.

Great writeup as always.
I’m assuming we are at the point in the season where we want the teams around us to start losing so we can make a case for a 1 or 2 seed. Looking forward to that thread starting here soon where we root for those teams to lose

What I enjoyed most was seeing how WELL the team performed when Santi went to the bench early with 2 quick fouls.
Then, Barnes put him back in ... in the first half ???(Barnes never does that!)... for a few brief stints. Shows the confidence he has in Santi ... to NOT pick up that third foul and even bury the deep 3 at the end of the first half.
@bleedingTNorange (shout out) ... Nkamhoua has never looked better ... put on an absolute clinic. Wow!
And his post game comments - first class and again, wow! I'ld say he has bought in big time! Talk about drinking the koolaid ... sounded like he was reading from a piece of paper that Rick had written up for him. ;^)))))
Tyreke Key 25:21
Julian Phillips 24:39
Santiago Vescovi 23:05 (probably reduced minutes with 2 early fouls)
Olivier Nkamhoua 22:35
Uros Plavsic 14:50
We again played 10 deep, ... great development of our players.
Shorter stints on the floor - seem to be producing better offense (but it could be the quality of the opponent, too).
Hey we got to practice a couple of defenses that we almost never see!
And to beat it all ... I never once saw Rick smile during the game. :^))))

Jonas Aidoo played very solidly on both ends of the court today and is going to be a greater offensive force with Nkamhoua's minutes in 2024.

Very solid win and a dominant performance,

Would love to see Key score a little more. Other than that, we are playing great.

I remember the days of trying to figure out if the Vols could squeak into the NIT. I was in attendance of one of the 5 wins during the 5-22 campaign.

It's nice to be at this level and the biggest worry is if we will get a 2 or 3 or 4 seed in the tourney
To point 2: Exactly what several of us have been saying. To add to the rebounding part, when he goes to the boards hard it makes us elite as a rebounding unit. His rebounding kick-started a 48-21 advantage on the boards to go along with 18 offensive rebounds.

He also has some beautiful touch on that little high-release shot within earshot of the basket, and seems to be supremely confident with it.

Not to be picky, I do think 22-24 minutes per game is his ceiling to get that kind of game. He was winded a good bit in the 2nd half getting back on offense. There were times he didn’t show up in the picture for several seconds as the offense had to wait on him.

If ON plays this way from here on out, which obviously expecting that good a game each time is not going to happen, then our ceiling is much higher. Heck, half those numbers on a consistent basis we would take and be a better team for it.

His best showing and is indicative on why Barnes has been alternately high and then frustrated with him. Go Vols.

Number 3 point is very true and the very thing that we have had issues with in the past. While none may dominate there (at some point Aidoo may), as a group we will not be dominated there either. Even Uros plays an important role in this team. Great write up, great game! The future’s so bright, I’m going to have to wear shades.

It's kind of a 3 to make 1 situation. Even Uros who is clearly the least productive of the three can be the man on a given night. If he is mentally locked in especially.

One thing that might get overlooked is the minutes being played. We are so deep and able to go with little to no drop-off, I have to think we will have much fresher legs for the stretch run, as compared to teams only 6-7 deep rotation. JP played the most minutes the last 2 games and he only played 52 of a possible 80. That will be huge later in the season. I personally think this is the best chance TN has ever had a going deep into the tournament.
Stay focused and season is bright!

Go Vols!!

Another encouraging thing? This offense is humming without Key adding anything on that end. If we can get his confidence back down the stretch, there’s no ceiling to what this team can accomplish.

Nice write-up BTO. A couple of other observations, Berryvol

1. Key was #1 in minutes, he should score more and probably will in most games.

2. JP still hasn't hit his stride. He will be fabulous by March, hopefully.

3. As mentioned by one poster, Barnes normally never puts Santi back in with 2 fouls. I don't think it's because he is more confident in Santi, but he has many more options if Santi fouls out or gets into major foul problems.

4. Aidoo hasn't been at his best last couple games.

5. Awaka is still learning.

All the above could click at any week, but hopefully all are remedied by March. RB has the best roster he's ever had at UT. Just keep all players happy!

4. Aidoo hasn't been at his best last couple games.

Adioo's last couple of games have been stellar.
against MissSt
Sophomore Jonas Aidoo had a standout performance on the boards for Tennessee with a career-high 13 rebounds—six offensive—and eight points in a career-high 29 minutes.

Yeaterday he was solid too with 15pts, 2/3 from 3 , 3 blocks and a steal in 20 mins.

I stand corrected. Hope to see him continue his progress! I would like to see his minutes increased, I am big on Aidoo - he quietly produces, obviously!

This team is playing with extreme confidence and I don’t recall many UT squads with as deep of a rotation. Our depth allows us to play with defensive effort at all times. Only one player (Vescovi) averages over 30 minutes per game currently. Our commitment to feed post players these last few games has been obvious. Even if they kick it back out our half court offense runs much smoother. If we swing through our next 5 games without a loss heading into matchup with Texas that would be impressive. Very possible. About the only issue we have recently is just unforced turnovers. Will be interesting to see how we do against higher level athletic teams like Bama who was equally impressive yesterday.

I still think our post season success in NCAA tournament is going to depend on Key and Phillips being able to score at a consistent clip, of around 12 per game each. We have seen teams target Vescovi and make life difficult for him. Whether Nkamhoua and others will maintain confidence offensively when the stage gets bigger or will they get hesitant and defer will be interesting to watch. I’m not sure how they will respond. We know Vescovi and ZZ never shy away from the stage but they can struggle to score at times especially if very good teams aim to shut them down.

There are a few players who have probably reached their ceilings as productive players. Uros comes to mind. Maybe Santi is as good as he'll get. But we have so many players who are improving game over game right in front of our eyes: ON, Aidoo, Awaka, Mashack, Phillips, ZZ, etc. You could even put JJJ in that category as he works his way back from injury. Other good teams will keep improving, too. But so many of our players have so much more development and growth to go that we might have a real juggernaut by tournament time. I think the continued high level development of Aidoo, Awaka, and Phillips are key to our ultimate success.

Something very good: over last 4 games, Santi is 14-24 from 3 for 58.3% and maybe even more important, he’s 9-15 for 60% from 2. All-around game is back. Assists to turnovers has been really good, and he’s been a great stealer of the ball.

I'm going to give him credit because I'm the first one in line to beat on him when he's dogging it. Olivier Nkamhoua played excellent, yesterday. I started watching the game just knowing this was going to be a stinker for him after the first 7 or 8 minutes and he had fumbled a couple passes away, and then he just turned it on. Scored at will with his turnaround jumper, scored on the break, scored in the paint. He even dominated the glass like he should. Extremely impressed with his effort.

Since BTO mentioned it in the original post, I took a look at KenPom this morning, and we have, indeed, almost completely closed the gap with #1 Houston (31.60 vs. 31.16). There's also a pretty sizable gap between Tennessee and #3 Connecticut (31.16 vs. 27.52).

Advanced stats aren't everything, but when you look at tournament champions going back to 2002, their average ranking according to KenPom's AdjEM has been 3.05. In two of Connecticut's title years, they were ranked #10 and #15, so if you take away those outliers, the average KenPom ranking for the other 18 tournament champions is 2.

In our seasons that qualify as "good" under Barnes, we've kinda hung around KenPom's top 10-15, so this is a huge leap. If they keep playing to their potential and stay healthy (big "ifs" for sure), there's not a single team they can't beat. Sky's the limit, and it's been so good to see their improvement with JJJ back. They've been scary these past two games.
