1. Had our first bit of adversity it felt like today, first time trailing all year (got down by 8 iirc), had Awaka go out injured early, Knecht missing most of the 2nd half, lots of first half foul trouble…but Vols never seemed panicked or flustered, the veterans made sure everyone stayed steady and once Tennessee regained the lead they kept control the rest of the way, that was nice to see.

2. Speaking of veterans, I can’t say enough about JJJ after that one, and really just overall to start the season. I had mentioned how well he’s been playing but he turned in his best performance of the year today and when his teammates needed him most, his 3pt shot continues to be greatly improved and he hit the boards hard today pulling down a team high 12 rebounds, with the Awaka injury we even saw some of JJJ at the 5. He’s really rewriting his career so far through 4 games, for his sake, and Tennessee’s, I hope it continues.

3. Felt like Syracuse made a concerted effort to run us off the line and when they went zone really extending it, 14 attempts from 3 wasn’t a number I expected to see and not sure it’s a great offensive strategy for this team, but to their credit they got it done. The 16 turnovers was too many and the 41% from 2 when shooting 38% from 3 on the year is a tough one to swallow, Vescovi & Gainey really struggled as did Zeigler as well, we gotta finish better from 2, especially our guards.

4. To the teams credit while the offense wasn’t pretty (feels nice to say when still breaking 70), this game resorted to a comfort of many of the vets and Rick Barnes, tough and gritty and defensive minded. Syracuse hadn’t scored less than 79 yet this year, we held them to 56, and that was with Judah Mintz hitting some tough shots late and getting to the line. We don’t want to have to rely on that defense to be elite each and every night as we’ve learned in the past, but it’s nice to know they still got it if/when they need it.

5. Obviously not saying anything that isn’t already known, but Dalton Knecht is really damn good and is going to be such a weapon for us. Loved that we were able to do it without him for the much of the 2nd half, but his first half was needed and it felt as if he knew it and kept on going. As he continues to get more and more comfortable and Zeigler & Vescovi continue to find their footing this offense should continue to improve, their ceiling can be very high.

6. Got the W, should be a solid resume win come March away from home, wouldn’t have been a bad loss but now you’re pretty much guaranteed 2 more Q1 opportunities over the next 2 days which is huge for the overall SOS and resume. Gonna be a really tough task, have to think splitting these 2 would be a win but obviously we all are selfishly wanting more. To me the biggest thing will just be looking like we belong, Purdue returns a bunch of guys and is one of the favorites to win it all, losing that one early on doesn't mean we suck, should be a great measuring stick for our guys and learn a lot.

JP Estrella came in after the Awaka injury and played his ass off on the boards and made a great pass to Knecht for a 3.

Aidoo needs to take the ball at Edey tomorrow night and get him in foul trouble.

Great win. Good to see us battle through the loss of Awaka and Knecht. As for Purdue, I'm not sure any team has an answer for Edey. About the only way I can see us winning this one is if we go absolutely nuts from 3pt land. Should be interesting to see how we handle this one.

Amazing how much impact Santi had without hitting a 3. JJJ had a great game. Aidoo was really good.

This was Mashack's best game of the year-- 1 TO, in control, multiple rebounds & assists, hitting FTs at like a 90% rate.

So nice to see a team TN team that can demolish a zone. So rare for us.

ZZ was solid late, but holy crap batman...SIX TOs from him is wierd and frustrating (at least half were under minimal pressure, too). I'm putting that in the "will return to normal" basket along with Vescovi's 3-pt shooting

All in all, solid win with the kind of lumps and bumps that lead to aloss other years, against a Syracuse team that looked better than I expected.

Did not look sharp early on, but I think the 9:30 AM local time tip probably contributed to that some. To their credit, they did what good teams do, which is respond.

It is nice to feel like we haven’t particularly shot the ball well to start the year and our offense has produced 73 points and 80+ 3 times. If and when this team finally clicks on offense, we will be elite.

I think the biggest concern at this point now is just health. Suddenly, our really deep roster is down 2 players (Awaka and Dillione) and Knecht got a bit banged up and dealt with some cramps but looks like he’ll be okay for tomorrow. Surviving this game while down 3 rotation guys in the second half really speaks volumes about how talented this team is. Just need to get healthy and can’t afford to lose anyone else.

Estrella had some HUGE minutes today and he is really flashing his talent. Excited about his future and with Awaka down we’ll need him to step up.

It is understandable that Santi and Zakai are struggling a bit on offense right now, and while we don’t need them to be scoring 12-15 a night, we definitely need them to shake the rust off by conference play. With that being said, you just cannot say enough about Santi. Didn’t score a lot but he did just about everything else you could possibly ask for and more. His leadership is really showing out, and he’s making everyone else around him better.

I’ll just close by saying….JJJ with a +28 when he was on the floor and -6 when he was not 👀👀👀👀

•We killed Cuse on the boards with an exclusive 4-guard, and sometimes 5-guard lineup. 48-33 overall and 13-6 on the offensive glass. That's without Awaka for most of the game.

•Of the 16 TOs, 5 were stepping on the sideline. Aside from that, you can live with 11 TOs.

•Saw a stat where Tennessee was +28 with JJJ on the floor, and -11 with him off the floor (in 6 minutes).

My memory is fading with age. Had Awaka already injured that ankle in a prior contest? At around the 17:40 mark he had just set a screen for Knecht and his next steps were with a limp. Didn't see any contact nor pivot with his ankle to cause it, but on the prior play he had his shot rejected under the basket by McLeod although I didn't notice anything discernible then. Just wondering if he hurt the ankle in a prior game and it flared up on him without turning it or due to contact???

Zeigler reminds me of when I used to come back to play ball after not doing so in forever. Like, everything seemed a little fast and rushed, plus you miss an odd dribble for some reason, as it slips away from you. It's a weird feeling and hard to fix other than simply playing more and having your timing come back.

Also, I like Santi's play today, but he needs to start hitting outside shots to open this offense up a bit more.

We missed so many shots at the basket in the first half---Ziggy and Mashack missed layups, with Ziggy giving it the hot-doggy one-hand form that's not a great look when you miss. Gainey missed a dunk, and there were a couple of others. Just a scratchy offensive effort--but played great defense in the last several minutes of each half and really shut down a young Syracuse team. Not liking Ziggy's game right now--6 TOs in 21 minutes. Beats his defender with the dribble, but then often gets 10/12 feet from the basket and has nowhere to go, has to stop and hope he can find somebody open with taller guys surrounding him. Not ideal.

JJJ with a super game. Santi is not scoring but 5 assists, 5 boards and only 1 TO is a very solid contribution. He will get going with his shot--and we need him to as we are already becoming very dependent--maybe too much so-- on Knecht.

I don’t remember James making it through a prior season without batting injury. He appears fully healthy right now and it reflects in his performance. A healthy James makes such a huge difference for our team. Maybe it’s BVS, but I wish Barnes would keep him on limited PT until later in the season. We desperately need him healthy for the NCAA tournament.

At least 4 missed layups, stepped OB 5 times and playing without Awaka for most of the game, without Knecht for most of the second half, Vescovi only making 1 FG and Ziggy having BY FAR his worst game as a Vol and still getting a 17 pt. win against a quality opponent...I think we're a REALLY dangerous team.

We won by 17 and still can play so much better. We looked tight against Syracuse in the first half which is a bit surprising for an experienced team. Showed grit despite adversity and injuries. Vescovi was calming influence after Knecht went out in 2nd half. Zeigler has got to stop pressing and being careless with the ball and bad decision making. His 4 consecutive turnovers in less than 2 minutes gave Syracuse life when we were building a double digit lead.

Overall a good win albeit kinda ugly. We can beat Purdue but expect they will play better than they did against Gonzaga. Great early season matchup. Just relax and play our game. I would push tempo and run Edey all game long.

What do you mean about James rewriting his career? He has been out best player for 3 years in a row.
