1. Much like the midweek game against Arkansas we came out focused and ready to play and put together a complete performance. That’s a pretty bad Vanderbilt team, and we’ve played well at home, but when you can win by 30+ without anybody playing more than 25 minutes that’s super impressive. Again couldn’t have asked for much better on either end of the court from Tennessee, that stacks up there with one of their best showings of the year imo.

2. No one guy went off, it was a balanced attack from Tennessee as they had all 5 starters go for double digits, and even more impressive was the efficient manner in which they did it. The 5 starters combined to go 25-40 from the field good for 62.5% and 12/20 from 3 good for 60%, which is absolutely bonkers. You obviously can’t count on that efficiency every single night, but it shows how balanced this offense can be and also how each guy needs to be aggressive and take the shots they get that are open, Knecht is drawing attention and doing a great job finding teammates, they need to continue to be aggressive.

3. I mentioned recently how it feels you can count on Knecht & Zeigler to bring it most every night, outside of them you would love to be able to count on a guy or two to consistently bring it. Jonas Aidoo had a great midweek game and I mentioned how 23 & 12 probably isn’t a fair expectation, but that 10 & 7 with rim protection should be a minimum from him, well he gave 11 & 8 with 3 blocks in just 20 minutes of gameplay, you’ll gladly take that. Similarly JJJ did exactly what you’d like to get from him, gave you 13 & 7 after giving you 12 & 3 in the Arkansas game. The best part though in my opinion was Vescovi, he finally looked like the Vescovi of old and you’d love to bottle that up and see that aggression from him each night…12pts 5ast 3rbd, he was 4/5 from 3 and was looking for his shots, and he and Knecht really seemed to be on a great page playing off each other. He’s too good of a shooter and getting too good of looks off the attention Knecht is drawing that he’s gotta stay aggressive, every time he’s open he needs to be letting that thing fly, 5+ attempts from deep should be a minimum for him.

4. A great aspect of these 2 complete showings this week was that you got some key players some rest, while also finding some minutes for younger guys. Your starters averaged only about 25mpg over both games which is obviously a lighter workload than most conference games for those guys. On the flip side you got some young guys some meaningful minutes, I thought Cameron Carr really showed his potential, that athleticism and wingspan is not something you can teach and you can see why coaches are so excited about his future here.

5. Tennessee needed to go 2-0 this week and they did so in convincing fashion, entering the 6 game stretch starting with LSU we said 5-1 or 6-0 would be ideal, some very winnable games. Obviously dropped the A&M game at their place, so currently 3-1 through 4 games of that stretch, the last 2 this week being at Missouri tomorrow nigh and then A&M comes to town Saturday. Show up and win these 2 games this week and you’re sitting at 21-6(11-3) entering the tough 4 game stretch to close the season but sitting in a great spot. Go 2-0 and you’re firmly on the 2 seed line with an outside shot still at a 1 seed, with the 3 seed line likely being the floor, still with a great shot at a SEC title as well. You also never know how things will unfold, South Carolina game looks much more winnable and now Auburn will likely be without Jaylin Williams when we face them, making that game more winnable as well. I don’t expect to win out by any stretch, losses happen in college basketball, just keep playing good ball and continuing to improve as a team as you head into March.

Was wondering if the PG report was even necessary after this one.😉 As usual, great write up. One game at a time down the stretch

Auburn is a different team at home; we win that one with or without Williams. USCjr is fools gold; they were very fortunate that we shot poorly that night, with the NCAA investigation as a distraction.

This team is special when everyone is scoring because no matter how bad it may be on a given night, the defense is usually not going to kill you. The questions for me are, can others be efficient when their time comes in a game Knecht is hot?… can Awaka and Estrella man the paint when Aidoo gets in early foul trouble?… and can we get off to good starts?… To me, if they can do the last, this team can win in a variety of ways.

Nice game, great write up OP and can’t wait till tom. GBO

We owe Texas A&M an ass whipping and Carr and Dillone can definitely be special players if they continue working hard.

Great writeup as always, BTO. Do you know what, exactly, the deal is with Estrella? I have a feeling we're going to need him to contribute meaningful minutes in that closing stretch (particularly vs. Auburn) as we're gonna have a game in which Aidoo and Awaka both get into foul trouble sooner or later.

I cannot agree more with your point in #4

Seeing the difference in Mashack this year vs last is really something. And it because of minutes and effort. Carr is going to be special. Young guys need some college game time minutes before they are asked to be the main man

6. ...and how long did Awaka play before getting his first foul?! Much improved performance by Tobe!
Same against Arkansas. Hopefully he’s improving in that area. He still had a silly foul against Vandy, but he never really got in foul trouble.

Great write up. Agree with all points.

The thing that gives me pause re: SEC title hopes is that we’d have to win in Tuscaloosa. I doubt many think there’s a good chance of that.

I think there’s a good chance of that. It’s college basketball so they may blow us out, but we match up well with bama. They don’t have a strong post presence nor rim protector. We’re capable of guarding the perimeter and Aidoo can challenge shots at the rim if they drive the lane. I think at worst it’s a 50/50 type game. JMO, TIFWIW, AARP

Are we really seeing this team jell coming down the stretch or is it just the level of competition we have played lately? Probably a bit of both. Every time I think Dalton can't play any better he does. His passing when the defense doubles him has been a out of this world of late. Earlier in the year he "struggled" (everything is relative) when defenses trapped him in the corner or wing. Now he just finds a spot up 3 or dunk for someone. So is this the best team we've ever had (it sure looks like it some nights) or another sweet 16 and see ya (it sure looks like it some nights)? Got a ticket to the USCjr game cause I think that's the most pivotal game coming up. Take that one and another SEC regular season title looks very possible!

• The Volunteers are 1-3 in their last four outings versus Missouri after winning each of the prior four contests.

Let's keep incubating those eggs... we can count chicks later.

I think Barnes knows he has 4 players that can be consistent. He has been working hard on the 5th Aidoo and its working. He still has the fumble hands, takes too many shots off his spots but his confidence has increased and he is trying to be a force on offense. His is playing his best ball of his career right now with room to improve. A double double player in the post makes this a legit tournament team.

It could easily be the best team we've had and not get past the sweet 16 of a one and done crapshoot

Go 5-1 to close, say the loss being Bama and you’re 14-4, if Bama drops 2 (plausible with their schedule) they’re also 14-4. If it’s us 2 tied at the top H2H would be even, so then it’s record against 3rd place team which likely would be Auburn, we’d be 1-0 in that situation and Bama 1-1, thus giving us the tie breaker.

Tie breaker is just used for the actual #1 seed in the tournament if I remember correctly. So technically we would both be SEC Regular Season Champs in that case.

Right now, tiebreakers are our friend. In the case of a 4 way tie at the top between Alabama, Auburn, Florida, and us, it's likely we end up as the 1 seed in the SEC tournament. Assuming we beat Auburn and lose to Bama, we would have a 3-1 record against those 3 teams.

I thought we just shared it with them? Thought there weren’t tiebreakers?
