Something I think all of us can get behind:

Rep. Burchett introduces Do Your Job Act to cut Members' pay when Congress fails to pass a budget

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 25, 2019) – Congressman Tim Burchett this week introduced the Do Your Job Act, H.R. 3440, a bill that would cut pay for House and Senate members each year that Congress fails to pass a budget.

“There’s been a lot of discussion around pay increases for Members of Congress, but why not pay cuts? Nothing gets done – on either side – because of partisan games. Congress is required by law to pass a budget, yet we haven’t done so in two decades. It’s ridiculous,” said Rep. Burchett. “If you don’t do your job in the private sector you don’t get paid. Congress should be held to the same standard.”

The bill states that if, by the first day of a fiscal year, both Houses of Congress have not agreed to a concurrent resolution on the budget then the annual rate of pay for each Member of Congress shall be equal to 90 percent of their current annual rate. In other words, each Member of Congress’s salary would be cut 10 percent each year they can’t agree on a budget.

“We have to stop funding the government by continuing resolution and piecemeal omnibus bills. Running the government this way holds the process and the American people hostage to partisan whims. Instead, we need to pass a real budget so we can have a real debate around spending priorities and how we use your hard-earned money,” said Rep. Burchett.

If passed, the bill would go into effect after the next regularly scheduled general election, in accordance with the 27th Amendment to the Constitution.

Except for the people who would be voting on this legislation. I like Tim, seems like a good guy, but this will get laughed out of both chambers from both sides of the aisle. I guess it's the thought that counts but what a waste of time.

Yup
It’s a spending contest and he’s talking about savings and responsibilities.

It’s laughable.

If he could get social media to run with this hard enough folks could start hammering on their state reps with it.

Would be nice to see social media used to do something positive politically instead of just being a venue for insults.

Do it. Would love to see it changed to jail time tho. The damage they are doing to our society and nation is catastrophic.
We cant' go jailing our representatives for every little thing. However, one thing I WOULD do is to require them to remain in session all day, every day, no weekend breaks, no vacations until they pass the budget. It is their ****ing job, and they do not do it.

I agree. The fact that these buttholes go home and get nothing does drives me crazy. It's amazing how much they dont care, and how much they get away with not caring

Make them live in dormitories in DC?

Pretty sure TN average pay wouldn’t cover DC living expenses.
If they are to represent the people in their district, they should get paid what those people get paid. Too many career pols that only have a PO box in their district and have no interaction with or idea what the people they represent live or what they need. Sucks for them if that lux apartment in DC is too expensive. Learn to live within your means and maybe the government as a whole would start to do the same thing... eventually.

I get what you’re saying, but I think term limits is a better solution.

I don’t think your idea would lessen corruption in politics - might actually make it worse.

Probably, you would have folks taking big kickbacks to offset the salary. However, I also think you would have more home grown guys running with genuine intent to help their state/district rather than just to get fat. Possible for good or bad.

Not too many regular folks from rural districts would make that sacrifice in my opinion when their counterparts from NY, CA, etc are getting paid twice as much

Time for a rehash I see.
1) All of them except Pres, VP, and cabinet get paid by their respective states.....this includes all of their staff.
2) They live in a compound in DC, they can travel back and forth to work in DC in the community bullet proof van.
3) All expenses are paid by their respective states.

The states determine their raises or cuts. They work for the state, they should be paid by the state.

most people, even on this forum don't understand this. which is another reason I find the two party system laughable. a TN Dem is not a CA Dem

Apparently the state they represent after election is a different one ... "the state" as in the all encompassing one. The one that pays them and provides them an office, expenses, a very special retirement package, and fantastic healthcare, No wonder they forget their roots ... a bit like that really old WW1 song ... "How Ya Gonna Keep 'em Down on the Farm (After They've Seen Paree?)" Federalism is and will continue to be a plague.

If they can't agree on a budget for a federal department, one of their main responsibilities, then breakup that federal department, reduce taxes accordingly and send the responsibility back to the states. The purpose of making something federal is to gain efficiency, reduce cost and unify procedures. This is almost never the case, as with The Education Department.
