No, it's about government control. The government of Syria would be potentially threatened by religious fundamentalists, and thus tries to keep them in check. See: Turkey, to some extent Saudi Arabia, Jordan, etc.

Or, see what happened to Iran and Lebanon.

Hey, that's how they got there. They understand power.

You can't blame them, i reckon, in their positions. They can also come in handy for "picking up" persons who happen to come onto our radar for bad business. Holder has no authority there.

Hell, France is looking into it. I see no reason at all to ban them.

Seriously? You know how boring campus would be if all the women were allowed to cover EVERYTHING up? It's an issue all men should be united on.

people should be allowed to do wahtever they want in this matter.

I agree completely.

One argument I've heard for banning it is that it is a symbol subjugation for women. Will someone please tell me when we are supposed to be culturally tolerant and when we are supposed to ban cultural practices? Thanks.

it IS a symbol of subjugation for women. on the other hand if a woman wants to be subjugated than so be it.

Most Muslim sects do not force their women into the whole face veil, only the more radical sect do. Syria is a fairly secular government and is trying to curb the radicals. I do wonder though, how may women there were wearing the niqab. Most of the time, women wearing those are not allowed to go out by themselves and attend college.
