It appears President Bush is a little sharper than some give him credit for being. Liberals will be disappointed to learn he might not be the warmonger they have painted him to be.

WASHINGTON – President George W. Bush rejected a plea from Israel last year to help it raid Iran's main nuclear complex, opting instead to authorize a new U.S. covert action aimed at sabotaging Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program, The New York Times reported.

Israel's request was for specialized bunker-busting bombs that it wanted for an attack that tentatively involved flying over Iraq to reach Iran's major nuclear complex at Natanz, where the country's only known uranium enrichment plant is located, the Times reported Saturday in its online edition. The White House deflected requests for the bombs and flyover but said it would improve intelligence-sharing with Israel on covert U.S. efforts to sabotage Iran's nuclear program.

I don't know how much more asking Israel is going to do... Should be interesting when Mr. Obama takes office.

Credit where credit is due ring a bell?

Your head is so far up Obama's ass, you can't think objectively.

Bush was a moron way before Obama was even in the picture. Seems you throw the "hypocrite" label around way too carelessly. What about you back up your assertion?

Bush is a bumbling moron. One right does not make up for hundreds of wrongs.
I disgree with your assertion that this was a "right" thing to do. If anything, this should be filed under the category of "blunders".

If we would just let Israel off it's leash, they could do some damage in the Middle East/Iran...

They could also start World War III.

Obama said that Iran couldn't be allowed to have nukes, and he also stated that he'd go after Osama and other terrorist wherever they might be. Talks cheap, now he's going to be the man... Tune in next month at the same obama-time, same obama-channel. In the mean time notice how the media love fest has already started to ease a little. They still are ready to anoint him the greatest President of all time, but he needs a little of their guidance...

I hope and pray he's going to be a MUCH better leader than I believe. Prove me wrong, I'm counting on it.

The problem I see is that Israel had to ask permission in the first place. The fact that they do gives credence to my point in another thread that they are just our proxy in the region.

Are they not a sovereign nation? If they want to bomb the snot out of Iran that should be their prerogative. Why the hell do they need our permission? Ron Paul said it best in one of the debates when he said "We don't treat Israel in an adult fashion". In many ways, they are treated like a kid by us. It's one of the reasons we are not really viewed as a honest borker in the talks between Israel and the Palenstinians.

Anyway, didn't Israel already do something like this in the 70's or 80's....I mean, strike and Iranian nuclear facility?

Israel had to ask for the airspace over Iraq. The only other viable options would have been for Israel to either request or violate the airspace of Saudi or Turkey.

Israel bombed the Iraq nuke facility in the 80's.

They did the same thing on an Iraqi light-water nuclear materials testing reactor in Osiraq in 1981, presumably without permission to use Saudi, Jordanian, or Syrian airspace (they used Saudi Arabian and Jordanian, btw).

I think this is just more of this "we need to ask daddy first" mentality with Israel. If they want to plan their own covert strike against another country, they shouldn't have to ask us for permission. We need to let them stand on their own two feet.

If an unauthorized aircraft enters Iraqi airspace right now, it runs a high risk of being targeted by us. Israel most certainly must request to clear that airspace if they wish to fly over Iraq.

Certainly, they can fly over Saudi and/or Turkey, however, that also violates those nations' airspace and, thus, their sovereignty. In 1981, Israel had the privilege of not having any allies in the region. Presently, the US is in the region, as well as allies of the US (Saudi and Turkey). I am pretty sure that the Israeli government understands that by violating Saudi and/or Turkish airspace they could possibly do considerably damage to the American cause in the Middle East.
