We've been down before, but never when so many other SEC teams were up. Butch doesn't have the luxury of 2-3 gimme league games on the schedule like Majors and Fulmer had.

We are woefully behind most SEC offenses in terms of talent at the skill positions, especially at QB. It will take time to build up experienced, elite depth at WR, RB, and QB

This is going to be a long, hard slog to get back into the SEC upper echelon.

Anyone who thought differently was just kidding themselves.

Especially the with the effort and heart these guys play with. I can't wait to start getting Butchs players in here. The stink of Dooley showed up again last night seeing players giving up.

Fulmer never had to rebuild anything.

When you're down, it's hard to get back up. I don't feel sorry for a guy that makes 3 million a year though. He knew what he was getting into and took it head on. That's the type of guy we needed.

I say Dooley. Virtually no upper class-men, OL made up of mostly freshmen, and about 15 players under the scholarship limit. Serious off-field discipline issues and a major NCAA investigation.

a much tougher re-building job. He was saddled with 220 pound defensive tackles and 4.9-40 wide receivers and running backs and no quarterback.

Arguably the toughest in all of college football. With the schedule we have its going to be ridiculously hard to get back to contending in the SEC. I don't know how we will be able to without several top 10 recruiting classes.

Look guys, this can still be a very successful season. Coming in, at least in my view, the pinnacle was 3 fold
1. A signature win - check
2. A great recruiting class - check
3. A bowl game - still in reach (and will come down to Vandy....)

If VolNation thought otherwise then cry your own river you for not being realistic.

All in all this can still be a great season. Am I disappointed in some of the games where we were not even competitive? Sure. But I also understand where we are with depth and talent too.

Agree. But to me the unit that needs upgrading the most is our oline.

So what is it with our O-line? The starters are all upperclassmen and were heralded pre-season as the best O-line in the SEC. In past 2 weeks, however, they've been thoroughly manhandled by the 2 best defensive fronts, Bama, & Mizzou. Why? Is the talent just not there? Is it because of 3 years of Dooley?

The roster lists quite a few underclassmen who'll need to step in next year. Who are the most talented prospects? Any expectation they'll be better than this year? Worse?

Put a star QB in there and watch the o-line suddenly look much better. I think some people overrate the overall impact of an offensive line. Not too many, but some.

Majors first team faced 3 teams ranked in the top 20

Butch has already faced 6 teams ranked in the top twenty, Auburn will make 7.

Nope. He helped build it.
He was one of 9 asst. coaches on Majors' staff. The team that Fulmer took over went 29-6-3 in Majors last 3 full seasons, with wins in the Cotton and Sugar Bowls, and a loss in the Fiesta. They also won or shared the SEC Championship in 2 of Majors' last 3 years.

Fulmer deserves credit for continuing the success of, and contributing to, the rebuilding job of Johnny Majors.

As we re-build, the other S.E.C. programs which are better teams than us right now, will, at some point, dip down some.

It all works in cycles. When these other programs hit a down cycle, we will have an up cycle and will beat them. We just need to stay withing striking distance of them.

Alabama lost Gene Stallings. Then recruiting fell off, then probation. Then DuBose, Francione, then Shula.

L.S.U. had Mike Archer, Gerry DiNardo and they were not good, until they hired Les Miles.

Florida was bad until they hired Spurrier. Once Spurrier left, Zook was hired and they were not a good team. Once Urban Crier left, Muschamp arrived and they still aren't a good team.

We need to get to consistent 8 win seasons. Then when Florida, UGA, Alabama etc. slip, we will be able to get our 9th, 10th, & 11th win of the season.
