Given the monumental problems we have suffered in recent years on special teams, the following comments from Evan Woodbery (see Vols say that first year of camp under Butch Jones marked by 'energy' » GoVolsXtra) should sound like music to the ears of many Tennessee fans:

"During the parts of practice open to the media, [Butch Jones] coached the special teams aggressively. He may not have the title, but it seems clear that Jones is the de facto special teams coordinator. Jones said he considers special teams to be of “monumental” importance.

“We’ve always repped it a lot,” he said. “Everywhere we’ve been (at Cincinnati and Central Michigan), we haven’t been the most talented football teams. The momentum of a game can change on special teams.”

Huge deal for the team---we have to get more out of special teams. It's good to see Butch working with the WRs and the special teams. He might need a therapists chair to work with Palardy and Darr though---those guys need some work big time.

The great teams make special teams a priority, especially the "net" punting stat.

Just like WR U, UT used to be known for very good to great special teams. Get us back Butch!!!

Coach Urban Cryer used to be pretty involved with special teams at Florida. It worked out good for them.

Those two may be irretrievable basket cases. If not, I have a feeling that they will learn from Butch's controlled chaos the essence of Friedrich Nietzsche's statement, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger."

I want to see some damn blocked punts and fieldgoals by us! I seem them on sportcenter all the time, but never by us

I'm really happy to hear this. I think if there's been one consistent weakness with Tennessee over the past decade, it's been special teams.

Our "D" was pretty good even during the bad Fulmer years, but became more inconsistent after that, and outright horrible during Dooley's last season. Our offense has gone through both good spells and bad spells during that timeframe, as well. But special teams has been consistently poor through almost that entire stretch.

Special teams can definitely be a game changer - just ask Frank Beamer.

1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.

2. Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE.

3. If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam.

4. Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game.

5. Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.

6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.

7. Carry the fight to our opponent and keep it there for 60 minutes.

This.

The last 4 years I think we did #2 sometimes....and part of #4.

1 and 7 was the worst.

That's really the one aspect of the game i miss when fulmer was hc...we always had very disciplined special teams.

Blocked punts and fieldgoals hate UT!

With the exception of Brandon James and DeSean Jackson you're mostly right.

Special teams have been a little too "special" lately.

^True! Butch has (Hopefully) gotten rid of the Special Teams away game transportation. :)
