I figured I'd do a little research on Butch Jones' history on the road, and it's actually a little troubling, but I could just be looking too far into it. I do have faith in Butch Jones and think he's going to bring us back to prominence, but from the statistics, it would be indicative that his candor, morale, motivation and/or confidence decreases when he goes to the opposing team's stadium. Attitude and performance reflect leadership, so this could be an issue for the Vols down the road if true.

The following are Butch's regular season records, not including conference championships or bowl games:

Cincinatti, 2010: Home: 3-4 Away: 1-4 (4-8)
Cincinatti, 2011: Home: 5-1 Away: 4-2 (9-3)
Cincinatti: 2012: Home: 7-1 Away: 2-2 (9-3)

Home Total: 28-9 ~76% win percentage
Away Total: 19-16 ~54% win percentage

Just thought it was an interesting, though slightly discomforting, statistic.

I'd bet those Central Michigan teams were playing some parade float games.

Kind of wonder about the typical coaching record on the road vs home, but that is a pretty big difference.

Can't help but notice all four road games this year have been disasters...although against top notch opposition with the exception of Florida (ha ha kind of feels good to leave them out :))

Actually, I'll bet that some of the Central Michigan road games were "breathers" for the major conference schools. Didn't Butch sneak up and beat Michigan St. one year at CMU?

Also, notice that the teams got better the longer he was there. I realize the last 2 years at Cincy were both 9-3 but thats pretty near the ceiling at Cincy. If we give him time, we will improve.

I am not sure if this is discomforting or pretty typical since many of a home team's games are cupcakes, but road games are typically against conference opponents for the major schools and playing the cupcake role for this others. It would be an interesting statistic to see what the overall average of home vs. away winning percentage is for college football.

It is a HECKUVA LOT BETTER than the past two coaches who had overall losing records including the home games too!! He has won everywhere he has coached. I would say it's a pretty safe bet to say that almost all coaches winning percentage away from home is not what the home winning percentage is.

You can twist numbers to say what you want them to. Maybe if you used just conference games it would be a little more fair.

I do like the jump from year 1 to year 2 at uc.

The "road block" is the only thing i have trouble with. CBJ has got to get the team over this. I think he's got what it takes, ive just got to see results.

I broke this down a little more. He doesn't have too many bad road losses. Just tough road schedules, especially at CMU. The only one that jumps out @ Toledo in 2012.

2007 Home:
W vs. Toledo, Northern Illinois, Army
L vs. North Dakota St., Eastern Michigan

2007 Road:
W @ Ball State, Kent State, Western Michigan, Akron
L @ Kansas, Purdue, Clemson

2008 Home:

2008 Road:
W @ Ohio, Toledo, Indiana, Northern Illinois
L @ Georgia, Purdue, Eastern Michigan

2009 Home:
W vs. Alcorn State, Akron, Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Northern Illinois
No losses

2009 Road:
W @ Michigan State, Buffalo, Western Michigan Bowling Green, Ball State
L @ Arizona, Boston College

2010 Home:

Okie dokie, so I went back and looked up Butch's records against conference opponents home and away, and was a quite a bit relieved from looking at that. So let's recap conference records:

Central Mich, 2007: Home: 2-1 Away: 4-0 (6-1 conf, 7-5 overall)

Central Mich, 2008: Home: 3-1 Away: 3-1 (6-2 conf, 8-4 overall)

Central Mich, 2009: Home: 4-0 Away: 4-0 (8-0 conf, 10-2 overall)

Cincinatti, 2010: Home: 1-3 Away: 1-2 (2-5 conf, 4-8 overall)

Cincinatti, 2011: Home: 2-1 Away: 3-1 (5-2 conf, 9-3 overall)

Cincinatti: 2012: Home: 3-1 Away: 2-1 (5-2 conf, 9-3 overall)

Total conf Home: 15-7 ~68% win percent
Total conf Away: 17-5 ~77% win percent

In short: There is really no rhyme or reason to my logic, and it is clearly flawed. The SEC is just a tougher conference, but fortunately we match up better against our out of conference opponents (most of the time) than Cincy or Central Mich did.

Correct. To illustrate this point, consider that Central Michigan played the following nonconference road games during Butch's tenure there:

2007: Kansas (12-1) L 7-52; Purdue (8-5) L 22-45; Clemson (9-4) L 14-70.

2008: Georgia (10-3) L 17-56; Purdue (4-8) L 25-32.

2009: Arizona (8-5) L 6-19; Michigan State (6-7) W 29-27; Boston College (8-5) L 10-31.

It's just one game, but he did beat Michigan St on the road with Central Michigan. It was a weak MSU team (still bowl eligible), but impressive.

That'd be like if Rick Stockstill had rolled into Neyland in 2011 with his MTSU squad and beat us.

So because we've been routed at Oregon, at Alabama, and at Missouri, which happens to be the #2, #1, and #9 teams in the country right now, we're criticizing how he does on the road?

Let me repeat, 2 of those losses are to the 2 teams likely to be in the national championship game, and the 3rd may win the East.

The only way to judge fairly is to compare to other similar coaches away records to his.

We are in year one ( for the third time in 5 years ) with a depleted roster, not to mention we are playing the toughest schedule in the country. I really don't know what some of you people want.

Just thought it was an interesting, though slightly discomforting, statistic.

I think it's more comforting seeing the record his 3rd year at each school compared to his first year. No matter how bad it looks in some games this year or next, he's done this before and knows how to build a program.

Just for the record, in my original post I said that I support Butch and think he's going to bring us back to the top.

I'm only posting these stats as a purely informative and non-bias 'something' to know and speculate on.

Let's see, 76% + 54% = 130%

Butch has a 130% win percentage!!!! He gets it, we goin' undefeated next year!
