Unbelievable...he had me sold. My kids will be grown before we are good again.

Good news: We will be good again.

Bad news: I don't have any kids yet.....

it's all really speculative at this point. But our job is to report what we're hearing and being tipped on. As espn.com's pat forde said tonight, tennessee is obviously at "square one" right now. It's rare that a superpower like the vols would be blindsided like this, but then again, it happened to usc -- and they paid it forward. And to the chagrin of many in knoxville, the trojans have a new coach.

So as the vols search for a new coach, one hot name out there is troy calhoun of air force. Both sports illustrated's stewart mandel and rivals.com's tom dienhart threw out his name, because before tennessee hired lane kiffin last year, they were thinking about hiring calhoun, who was the houston texans' offensive coordinator before he took over at air force.

Espn's chris mortensen tweets that the vols should go get david cutcliffe, who was a peyton manning tutor, and has now revitalized the duke program.

Espn.com's mark schlabach suggested on espnews that texas d-coordinator will muschamp might get a call, as well. Muschamp, however, is set to be the heir to mack brown. Schlabach also suggests randy edsall of uconn, who was heavily linked to notre dame until brian kelly got the job.

Also, some have speculated steve spurrier would listen, if offered, though he's recently stated his commitment to south carolina. And we're not yet buying the jim leavitt and mike leach chatter out there. Also, before kiffin got the job last year, butch davis of north carolina was another name linked to the job. Lastly, two more names you're sure to hear are tcu's gary patterson and boise state's chris petersen.

One big concern for the vols is that monte kiffin, lane's defensive guru father, and ed orgeron, his ace recruiter, are going with lane. So they need, essentially, a total package hire.

Any truth to ya'll getting Will Muschamp?....IMO would be a lot better coach than Kiffin ever will be.

potential vols' candidates

* troy calhoun, air force: The vols were high on him last year before they hired kiffin.
* david cutcliffe, duke: Tutored peyton manning, had two stints with vols, most recently as offensive coordinator in 2007 and turned around the program in durham.
* will muschamp, texas: If this defensive ace is tired of waiting for mack brown to retire, this is his chance. Also, has sec experience with auburn.
* steve spurrier, south carolina: His super competitive side might be looking for a change since he hasn't been able to make the gamecocks into an sec contender -- yet.
* gary patterson, tcu: He just signed an extension, but this could be his first chance at major conference job.
* chris petersen, boise state: Was contacted by usc, but some questions about whether he's a good fit at these big schools.
* butch davis, north carolina: The former miami coach won't miss a beat on the recruiting trail, and was linked to the job last year before kiffin was hired.
* randy edsall, connecticut: Was mentioned for the notre dame and kansas jobs, too.
* jim leavitt and mike leach: We don't buy these names quite yet.

I supported Kiffin because he was the coach and I saw promise. But I think he made a mistake not finishing what he started especially working with little but the opportunity the Vol's gave him. All the promises he made are being returned: insufficient funds. Though those of you who questioned him turned out to be right I would probably extend the benefit of the doubt again in similar circumstances.

I like the idea of Muschamp. Think he could hold something of a recruiting class together but maybe its just best to let the chips fall where they may with recruiting and give the coaching search some more time.

I like Calhoun, patterson and petterson. Dont want muschamp because if mack brown leaves texaas next year then we have another coach leaving.

Also we fell for Kiffen for the same reason anyone falls for their head coach he gave us hope. The worst thing here is we dont know how long this takes us to recover because if this recruiting class falls apart especially our O-line prospects this sets us back atleast 2 years. He couldnt have picked a worse time to go.

Bright side of this for us as Tn fans will be USC getting the death penalty. I have never wished this on another team but at this time I am praying Kiff gets exactly what he deserves. I dont mind him leaving but the way he did this is disgusting. This hurts. But how happy does this make Fulmer.

What a slap in the face! This has to be one of the most back-handed moves in football history. I am sorry for ever supporting and having faith in this chump...my bad! Never have I seen a person attain so much that deserves so little. We are in for a long, tough road.
