We really need this bye week.

Prior to melting down, we (Vols) need to take a deep breath and think of a few things.

• We are losing games we should lose and winning games we should win.

• If you look at our recruiting and attrition our talent is middle bottom of the SEC with little depth. We are literally playing a freshman QB who is our third string QB in a new offensive system. Think of the QBs we passed on like Bryce Petty and Tajh Boyd….do you think they would have helped this year?

• We have no depth especially at LB and DB. These are the guys who protect the edges and they are wearing down. We need more playmakers and speed there and just don’t have it this year. Maggitt would have been a huge help if he was healthy. Reember how disruptive he was before he got hurt.

Let’s fast forward a year, We have a full recruiting class which will finish top 5. How many of you thought that would happen this year? This will bring quality depth at all positions and recruits that fit the system we are playing. This is the best class I can remember since late the 90’s and 11 are EE’s.

• We actually have the number one linebacker, OT and DL and possibly WR from JC.

• We have the Berry brothers, Dillon Bates, Todd Kelley Jr, Vic Whatron and Neiko Creamer who will really help lead us back to the top. These are VFL families.

• We lose both lines, but next year’s Oline will be made up of sophomores and juniors who have been in the system for 2 years (except Blair). I expect actually better zone blocking next year.

• Dobbs, Pig, North, Smith and Croom will all be in the system for year 2 next year and will work on timing all year. This will pay huge dividends next year. Then plug in our inkling WR’s and we will finally have possibly the best set of WR’s in the SEC.

• LB’s are bringing in a crazy good class and are likely to see a healthy Maggit and AJ Johnson. When Maggitt is healthy he is disruptive. Then you have Bates, Berry, Mouhon, Bryant, and Weatherd. We finally have speed at LB. Add in Reeves Maybin and will be competitive at starter.

• DB’s will finally have depth. TK, Cortez, Berry, Gaulden, Payne are all future starters. Mosely is a mystery, but if he runs a 4.3 we definitely need the speed.

• RB – We have not had a Jalen Hurd type since the early 2000’s. A big weakness this year is we don’t have a great RB. We have two decent ones. Just in the games today a true Jalen Hurd type would have broke 2-3 of those runs to the house. Huge holes today and Neal and Lane did a decent job, but just don’t have the shifty moves or breakaway speed. Both Hurd and Paulk (if healthy) are upgrades. Depth is still scary here.

This type of class will help put us back on top. Next year BJ will have 55 people that he recruited on campus. UF, USCe, Mizzou and UGA will all be down years. Mizzou, USCe and UGA replace senior QB’s and DL. UF is really going to struggle with that offense and they lose a little more on D.

Year two in the system will look much different than year 1 too on both sides of the ball.

The way we are losing is the problem. Our defense has regressed tremendously, but I do know the majority of those slow players are not his guys. One thing I do know, whoever is teaching are guys to tackle should be replaced. Butch just needs some better bricks I guess.

Have to agree that the tackling has regressed. As well, players are so out of position that they cannot recover. I know the D lacks speed and may not be so talented, but they do seem to be going in reverse. There was some new blood in there today as well, and it showed.

Problem 1. Lack of speed
Problem 2. Lack of depth
Problem 3. Already slow players are playing more defensive plays due to lack of depth
Problem 4. Already slow players become slower due to fatigue
Problem 5. Fatigued players breakdown fundamentally and technique suffers
Problem 6. Bad fundamentals and technique means poor tackling

Answer: In Butch's recruiting we trust!

I thought number 46 came in and played good in the mop up role. I am not sure who he is but maybe he can be a help after the bye week. I also seen Riyhad Jones and Maybin-Reeves in the game. So maybe after the bye week we will have some of the issues cleared up.

Have they really regressed, though? We gave up 59 to Oregon, 31 to a Florida team that can't score on anybody, 34 to UGA even after we injured half their team. Our D has been terrible all year. It's not like they were decent then started going backwards.
