I'll start:

1) Put a big lick on their QB on their first drive... wake him up to the fact he's in a hostile environment and not in fall practice anymore. Hopefully have him looking through an ear hole when he gets up with grass in his facemask.

2) Stuff Lynch on his first carry for zero or negative yards.

3) Ainge complete his first down field pass for positive yards and hopefully a first down.

Oh yeah, I hate to even mention this but...

4) Not do anything stupid on special teams.

Also:

5.) No TB fumbles...I know it doesn't happen every game, but it sure seems like it.
6.) No letting the other team convert on third and forever...this does happen every game doesn't it?
7.) Not let Cal score first.

8) Have a big play. Maybe even a game-breaker. I think that one 70 yard streak to the endzone by Meachem or a quick jab between the safeties by Foster just might be enough to give us the edge.

9) Live up to the hype in our defensive secondary. It's been awhile since Tennessee had a serious presence over the top and in the middle of the field. If we can eliminate Cal's threat down-field, I think our front seven will put the hurt on the run. Plus, an interception returned to checkerboard-land might just count as my "big play" referenced above.

10) TAKE BACK OUR HOME. It is time for the fans to take a stand (figuratively AND literally). Get up (if you can), get loud, and let the boys know that we're behind them. I can't bear so many big losses at Neyland.

Solid first drive using both our running and passing game. Look sharp. That will unsettle the Bear cubs and impress the "experts".

for me, this game comes down to three things:
1. no turnovers.
2. Get their offense off the feild when they are in 3rd and long (5 yards or longer--which means our 1st and 2nd down defense better be good...)
3. Convert on 1st and 2nd down. Can't be in 3rd and 6-7 yards a bunch...obvious passing situations would be our downfall. We need to be able to pick and choose what kind of plays we are running.

But to get off on the RIGHT foot, meaning early in the game, what needs to happen?

i agree w/ kiddiedoc, if we could have a bomb to meachem down the sideline on the first play of the game like we use to do w/ peyton and tee n andy n heath. if we can convert that on the first play of the game watch out.

i don't think it is necessarily one "statement" type of play either for offense or defense...i think it really comes down to how does the 1st series or two play out?

Obviously, on D 3 and out would be desireable. And offensively, i don't necessarily think we have to score a TD 1st time out, but we need to be able to establish ourselves and keep Cal on their end of the feild.

If we go 3 and out on offense 1st time out and give them the ball on their 40 or something, we get off on the wrong foot by immediately getting behind in the feild position battle.

Don't panic if we get behind early, and don't get over confident if our 1st or 2nd series results in points. We've seen that before...remember Syaracuse opener in Neyland? we looked great 1st time out and then really didn't do anything spectacular for the rest of the game.

1st series though better result in some 1st downs. a 3 and out would suck.

I'd just like to see the new offense clicking. I don't know if I could stand to see the ol' classic draw on third and long!!

1) Offensive linemen play with confidence and aggression.
2) Be patient and move the chains, get 1st downs.
3) On D, fundamentals Fundamentals fundamentals

Assuming that Ligon will be lined up on Mebane... run right at him. Take the heart out of their defense right away. Then go P/A to the TE so the LB's can't fly up to help.

One way to bloody their nose is to go after their stud right off. Another way would be to trap Mebane on about the first 3 or 4 plays with Sears coming down on him.

On D, the DT's have to penetrate or draw double teams. If that happens then speed takes over against both the run and pass.

And as someone mentioned, a backside blitz on Longshore's first drop back could ruin his whole day.

This may not be very exciting, but I say:
1) Sucessfully complete the first snap.
2) Run. With anger. A lot. Between the tackles for 4 yards a pop is just fine with me.
3) Keep our offense on the field as much as possible.
4) Knock the snot out of whoever is their first play from scrimmage QB.

Granted, #4 could be pretty exciting.

1. Create turnovers
2. Answer Cal scores. If they do put points on the board the offense will need to answer immediately. Ainge doesn't need the extra responsibility of playing from behind all day.

i have a feeling these seven will be the key...

1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.
2. Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE.
3. If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam.
4. Protect our kickers, our QB, our lead and our ball game.
5. Ball, oskie, cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle... for this is the WINNING EDGE.
6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.
7. Carry the fight to Cal and keep it there for 60 minutes.

We need to avoid the stupid penalties that halt a lot of our offensive drives. The false starts and holding penalties HAVE to be minimized or we're in trouble.

Play the enitre game hard on offense and defense. I'm sooo tired of watching UT only play hard for one half or dropping off in the fourth quarter. I know Fulmer doesn't like to run the score up, but score a hundred points if you can that way the players will be used to giving it there all for the entire game.

If it appears that we are definitely going to lose late in the 4th, UT fans should just storm the field and start a brawl, getting us disqualified nWo style. I think that would put the intimidation factor back in Neyland Stadium.

You run the ball right down up their facemask. The O line must set the tempo of the game with physical play. That's where I think we will have our greatest struggle.
