Calazghe defeats Hopkins

I did, Calzaghe looked absolutely outstanding for the last 9 rounds, and Hopkins looked like he ran out of gas after about the 5th.

I guess Hopkins will have to retire now. I was hoping he would get a rematch with Roy.

I thought Hopkins said he would never lose to a white boy? I guess he was wrong.

I was away for the weekend, got back to watch the last 6 rounds of the replay Sunday afternoon.

Joe looked damn good, and Hop just looked old down the stretch. It looks like the next one will be Roy Jones, who i figure Calzaghe should be able to deal with relatively easily, not the best fight, but the most profitable, and he says he only wants to fight 2 more times.

It's a testament to just how skilled and crafty B Hop is that he kept the fight so close. He may not get into mensa, but inside the ring, the guy's a genuis.

I had hoped that Hopkins would be able to get a rematch with glass jaw Roy Jones and send him to the canvas for the last time, and then into retirement. I'm so tired of hearing these Roy Jones slobbers talking about how great Roy Jones was when all he did was dodge fighters his entire career. Plus the fact that Jones was a juicy and tested positive for steroids in Indiana back in 2001 or so...

Well, we'll have to let Joe handle Roy. Shouldn't be a problem at all.

Jones beat Hopkins 15 years ago, and that was arguably his best win. And now, following his 3 fight losing streak, has gone the distance against 2 (VERY) fringe contenders, and a Felix Trinidad who had been inactive for 2 1/2 years and was fighting at 10lbs more than he ever had, and 23lbs more than he was when he had his most success. He's just lined up pigeons to knock over to get his name in the picture for another big PPV payday though.

Does anyone think he was actually serious about being willing to go to Wales to fight Calzaghe?

See, this is the reason why I lost all respect for Roy Jones. He ran his mouth for two years talking about he wanted to fight Felix Trinidad back in 1999/2000. Finally, in 2001, Trinidad and Hopkins ended up getting it on in September. But after B-Hop won that fight, here goes Roy with his filibustering negotiating. Popping off at the mouth about wanting to fight Hopkins. Then, the deal falls through. He blames Hopkins because he wanted half the purse, but Hopkins had the belt and had just beat Tito. This clown just spent his entire career running his mouth and fighting bouncers, off duty cops, and bartenders in Indian casinos and state fairgrounds.

Hell no. He refused to go to Europe to fight Dariusz Michalczewski when he spent 2 years running them lips about wanting to fight him. Then he ran to the heavyweights to fight a bum in Ruiz.

And he is talking smack looking for a fight with The Pride of Wales, a guy who has been dominant from the get go. Albeit, not many big time fighters come along at 168, but everyone said Lacy would beat Calzaghe, and Joe embarassed him. Same with Kessler, he put up a heck of a fight, but once again, Joe came through.

As a boxing junkie, I'd prefer to see a Calzaghe/Kessler rematch than Calzaghe/Jones, as Kessler has some thump, good footwork, and an iron jaw. But, growing longer in the tooth, i can't fault Joe if he takes the Jones fight for the HBO money. That said, i will pay the $50, just hope the undercard is great, because if Glass Jaw Jones doesnt get KO'd outright or get waved off, I'd expect alot of 119-109 scorecards.

John Ruiz, who lost to Valuev, what a crap talker. I am big on Wladamir, for nothing else than his good English, and brutal hook. It's just bad when the best european heavyweight speaks english better than the best american heavy. Sam Peter is a tough nugget, once the alphabet gangs get done with their crap and those 2 get it on for the 2nd time, its going to be an exciting fight. They both have alot more confidence than they did the first time around.

Didn't HBO fire Roy Jones because of his antics? I doubt they will want to have anything to do with that clown... especially now that he is washed up.

That is the reason why the heavyweight division is a joke. Not only can a bum like Roy Jones beat a "titleholder", but there are just way too many belts floating around. Aren't there still 4 hw titleholders from 4 different organizations/governing bodies?

Klitschko holds 2 of the "Recognized" 4 championship belts, but not "The Ring" Magazines belt (The only one that matters, as it's impartial, and can only be won by beating the champ in the ring, or if the championship is vacant, by the winner of a match between the #1 and #2 contenders, in some cases #1 and #3)

Rasputin, I weigh in at 205 lbs, if you are over 200, and we can combine money to have a nice belt, duke it out in your back yard, the winner could probably get an HBO date against a low grade American heavyweight like Shannon Briggs.

Are you familiar with "The Ring"? It's a breath of fresh air, compared to somebody i've never heard of fighting for the SDSDFGSDFGFGDFGDBA welterweight belt, without ever facing down Floyd, Cotto, Williams, Margarito or anyone of even limited substance.

Klitschko holds the IBF and WBO belts, Sam Peter has the WBC, and Ruslan Chagaev, who would stand no chance against the others, holds the WBA title. Ideally Peter would fight Chagaev, then Wladamir, and that fight would unify the title.

Another sign of the apocolypse for the heavyweight division is when the powers that be were trying to sell us a bill of goods with Chris Byrd.

I've seen a few of The Ring's rankings before, but haven't checked it out recently.

As Larry Merchant so eloquently stated between martinis, the best American heavyweights play Safety in division I football or the NFL now.

Back in the day, a heavy was an agile 210 pounder with great feet, swiveling shoulders, and a mean hook. Now they're clinching, sluggish, 1 punch KO artists. The American action is at 160 with Kelly Pavlik, theres talk of him and Calzaghe finding a catch weight, but its not a fight either of them need for their reputations.

Also talk of Pavlik / Hopkins at a catch of around 165, if that happened i'd honestly expect Hopkins would get kayoed.

What was the purpose of Roy using steroids to build himslef up to 200 lbs to fight Ruiz and only Ruiz, and then potentially drop down to 165 to fight?

Am I missing something on that?

Roys last fight was against Tito at 170, not Ruiz at 200+.....

I realize that, I'm talking about I don't understand the reasoning behind him going up to heavyweight in the first place. He built himself up to fight an overrated Ruiz, then drops back down after one fight.

Never understood what he was trying to prove. And then, for him to use the excuse after the 1st Tarver fight that the weight loss hurt his stamina/conditioning and what not.

I think he did it for the headlines, he saw a duck who he could deal with without much effort in Ruiz, and saw a chance for more hype.

Jones and his handlers were always good for that. As you mentioned, he fought few top level fighters, but was able to build an image with his careful picking and choosing fights. Alot like Tyson when he was coming up, well thought out opponents and a publicity machine with a plan.

Stupid as it sounds, people do eat that crap right up.
